i confess i will mostly miss the comics. can anyone recommend a good online comics page?

1. You won't miss Molly Ivins?
They didn't get rid of her, did they?

the one and only good thing about * is that he is the reason the trib runs molly's column.
i will miss a few others on that page. but i will be happy to have no more david, the maniac, byrne.

2. Certainly! I haven't lived in Chicago for 23 years, but they sucked
then, and from what I've heard, they suck now. We won't subscribe to the L.A. Times for the same reason. Osn't there an acceptable alternative?

3. The Reader is free
But you won't get much over-all coverage.

Steve Chapman writes thoughtful, important columns. He's also on the editorial board. I don't have to always agree with him to know that he is good at what he does, and is not a political hack.

The editorial page prints a wide range of (mostly} thoughtful views in letters and essays. Sometimes the RW letters scrape the bottom of the logic barrel, but rarely.

Their coverage of each region in the Chicago area is second to none.

The perspective section on Sunday probably will end up printing opinions on the events of Jan. 6.

(Writers, that's your cue.)

Their columnists Dawn Turner Trice and Eric Zorn are liberal in their views.

They carry a number of syndicated columnists whose views are decidedly anti-war and have a decidedly--when not pronounced-- anti-Bush policy view.

That's a quick run-down.

5. I canceled the Tribune, but my mom did not
She lives in Wisconsin in a non-rural area, but not Milwaukee or Madison. She feels the Tribune helps her stay connected and feel more cultured. If you are out in a conservative area, keep the Tribune, just don't read the editorial page.

editorial page.

Regularly.

8. I cancelled the Tribune in 92
Edited on Tue Jan-11-05 01:27 PM by AngryAmish
When the Cubs let Greg Maddux go to Atlanta in free agency. I'm still mad about that.

But I go to a lot of ballgames, so what do they care?

My small protest, that's all.

9. I canceled when...

...they endorsed the idiot. Called, wrote and emailed exactly why I canceled. I love when they call me to re-subscribe, it makes my day!

Cheers,
Kim

The Fourth Estate is not alive or well anywhere, so do not sweat it either way. I'd stick with them just for Peanuts.

14. Not to defend the Sun-Times
Because certainly giving those two access to the public is a crime, but the Sun-Times did endorse Kerry as opposed to endorse Bush in the most ass backwards way possible. Perhaps we could agree that the Sun-Times is the lesser of two evils?

Its like a donation to the Republican party. The Sun Times does better state news anyway and you'll get Jesse Jackson's column.

18. We just sub'd to the Sun Times and are enjoying it
They actually do investigative reporting on local govt. waste and fraud, and knocked the ball out of the park on the veterans' benefits story. The editorial page, with the exception of Greeley and Marin, is annoying, but I just skip most of it. We also get the NYT for national news, although I'm STILL waiting for a true liberal U.S. newspaper.

trying to get me to get a subscription - hard sell, too, I almost told the woman on the phone to leave me the fuck alone, but that would have been rude.

24. No matter how much the Trib pisses me off, I still read it. When
they really get on my nerves, I write a snotty letter, the last one being when they endorsed boyking.

25. I called to cancel my subscription a while ago
The lady on the phone asked me what my favorite part of the paper is. I told her Boondocks and the other comics. She got me to keep getting it on Sundays. Then they called up and gave me Wednesday and Friday for free for 24 weeks. I think they have a circulation problem and need more for their advertisers.

I'm going to haggle with the sobs when the free time is up!
