Chicago Sun-Times: Obama hears vets' complaints on disability pay

"An emotional crowd of 500 veterans packed an Evergreen Park American Legion Hall on Friday to voice a litany of complaints to newly elected Sen. Barack Obama about their treatment at the hands of the Veterans Administration.

Veteran Terrence Tibot said he fought for 12 years to get his degenerative disc disease recognized as a service-related disability, but now that the condition has gotten worse, he has to start all over again.

James Kemper, who was blinded in the line of duty, said the VA declared him incompetent to handle his pension and would not let his wife or other family members handle the money. Now they won't tell him what happened to it.

Andre Carter told of a friendly VA worker berated by her bosses because she was helping too many vets get their claims processed."
