Teachers may have to re-apply for jobs

June 23, 2004

BY KATE N. GROSSMAN AND FRAN SPIELMAN Staff Reporters

Hundreds of Chicago public school teachers will likely be told to re-apply for their jobs or find new ones under a massive plan to create 100 new schools in existing school buildings over the next six years.

The plan, to be unveiled by Mayor Daley Thursday, calls for 100 troubled school to be reconstituted with new staffs, principals and innovative teaching approaches, according to a handout distributed to aldermen Tuesday.

Many of these schools would close and re-open 12 to 18 months later, a senior school official said.

Tenured teachers at closed schools are guaranteed one year of pay while they look for a new job.

100 schools X about 80 teachers per school = 8000 people fired without just cause.

Thanks, Dick!

1. i doubt those teachers will wind up on the street
but a lot of them should.
i, for one, applaud much of this effort. i scream all the time about the fact that there is a math and science magnet in each region, but not a single public fine arts high school in the city. in a city where fine art and artistic endeavors make up a bigger and bigger piece of the economy. and everybody knows that a huge percentage of drop outs are right brain, artistic kids. it's insane.
and we desperately need trade schools. since the loss of washburne, there is a vacuum for skilled jobs.
cps is a calcified mess. the teachers union is a part of that mess. the creative application of a sledge hammer is a good thing.
