Woman cited for school board meeting assault

A Council Bluffs woman was issued a criminal citation for striking a Council Bluffs School Board member at Tuesday's meeting.
Council Bluffs Police reports indicated that board member Melanie Bates, 36, and Joyce Farrington, 54, were in a verbal argument after the school board meeting. At some point during the argument, Farrington struck Bates in the face with an open hand.
Reports stated that Farrington told officers that she was upset over the way the school board was handling things and got into the argument.

"Mrs. Bates was yelling at me, right up to my face," Farrington said. "I kind of lost it and slapped her."

Farrington said that she feels that the board has targeted her, and she is considering pulling her daughter out of the Council Bluffs Community School system.
"It's her senior year, and I don't think she would want to leave the district," Farrington said. "But these people (the school board) don't listen to parents or teachers."
Farrington was cited for simple assault and issued a court appearance for July 5.
Reports also stated that she was also issued a no trespassing notice.

Joyce Farrington is known for writing some pretty outlandish pro-GOP stuff in the Nonpareil. She's a Steve King sympathizer and bashes Harkin and Vilsack at every turn. I've responded to her letters to the editor on a few occasions, getting into a lengthy debate with her once (and in that debate she got pissed at me for calling her "Ms. Farrington" -- as if I'd know her marital status). Her arguments are so full of holes that it's easy to respond in a way that's both spot-on and witty. Her letters are that messed up. She's a full-on nut.
