Lt Governor’s forum filled with optimism for 06.

I just returned from a forum featuring all four Democratic candidates for Lt. Governor. The forum was sponsored by the Harvard Dems and moderated by former New Hampshire Gov. Shaheen. Thanks to Hoss for posting information on the forum.

All the candidates presented themselves professionally and thoughtfully. All stated they were pro-choice and for gay marriage. The one question I thought gave the most insight into the candidates was related to priorities. The candidates were asked what their top priority would be once they took office. Deborah Goldberg stated that healthcare was her top priority. Sam Kelley said healthcare as well. Tim Murray declared that ensuring cities get proper funding from the state and education would be his top priorities. Andrea Silbert stated creating jobs would be her top priority.

Now on to my subjective comments…

Deborah Goldberg came across as knowledgeable and confident. Her opening remarks where a little long and didn’t seem focused enough.

Sam Kelley, as my wife observed, spoke from the heart and came across as genuine. He was the victim of some microphone problems which may have contributed to him not coming across in a smooth and confident manner.

Tim Murray appeared to have the most depth. He was able to articulate city and state issues very well – sometimes a little too detailed though. He too was also the victim of microphone issues and didn’t communicate as smoothly as he could have.

I thought Andrea Silbert came across very well. She stayed on her jobs message and answered the questions succinctly and with conviction. While her no-nonsense style was refreshing, I worry that without a softer touch she may not come across as likable enough. If I had to vote today it would be for Silbert. Of all the candidates she seemed to have a vision and a plan for the Lt Governor’s position. My wife liked Sam Kelley. His “from the heart” style and genuine approach won her over.

Question: How did this forum slip under our collective radar screen? I just checked www.massdems.org's calendar - it was not listed there, either.
