Mike Rogers (R-Brighton) accused of breaking campaign finance laws
http://www.detnews.com/2004/politics/0405/08/politics-146395.htm

Thanks to Public Citizen, a scheme to illegally funnel money to a Republican Congressional candidate has been exposed, when they asked the FEC to investigate six PAC's, including ones run by Mike Rogers and Pete Hoekstra, both Republicans in the Michigan delegation. It is alleged that the PAC's each took money from Quentin Nesbitt, a wealthy businessman, and funneled it to the campaign of Geoffrey Davis, Republican from Kentucky. Davis is expected to face Democrat Nick Clooney, father of actor George Clooney.
Other PAC's implicated in the scheme include one run by Gary Bauer, famous fundamentalist Christian, and "Family First" an Ohio anti-abortion group.
In almost humorous fashion, Family First made a $5000 contribution to the Davis campaign on the very day that Nesbitt made a $5000 contribution to Family First. Coincidence??
Mike Rogers' PAC received a $1000 donation from Nesbitt, which was then given to the Davis campaign, along with $2000 more. Rogers didn't say who gave him the other $2000 to pass along to Davis. Hoekstra says he's going to come out smelling like a rose.
We'll see...

1. Mike Rogers is my congressman. I hope this is serious.
I recently wrote Rep. Rogers, expressing my concerns over our policies in Iraq. He responded in late April with two pages of nonsense, primarily focusing on, and attempting to document, the link between Iraq and al Qaida. I suspect his response came directly from the Bush Administration.

Fortunately, I have a couple of great Michigan senators representing my interests.

2. I read something else about Mike Rogers awhile back

I'll see if I can find the story. Basically, he was commenting about how much time he was spending fund raising for the party. Time that he chose not to use representing his constituents. (or at least 49% of them).
Found the link!

Mike is quoted in the article as saying he spends 10-15 hours per week fundraising for the party. (That doesn't even include the fundraising for his own election effort). If he's spending 10-15 hours per week raising money for the party, then he's either not working hard enough at his job, or he's missing out on needed sleep.

3. Rogers is a good repub soldier...I suspect he has high ambitions.
Rogers comes across as a moderate to many and is fairly charismatic. I have heard him speak a couple of times and he knows how to work the crowd. His work for his party suggests that he is accumulating favors. He is fairly young and I suspect is politically ambitious.

The response to my Iraq concerns was so right-wing it was chilling. The relationship he tried to establish with 9/11 and the Iraq invasion was inaccurate and, frankly, just plain dumb. I plan to reply to his response even though I know I am wasting my time. I am curious to see if the recent atrocities committed against detainees has shaken his chicken-hawk beliefs.

Thanks for the link.
