Report: Former Michigan coach Schembechler dies

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Former University of Michigan head football coach Bo Schembechler has died after collapsing during the taping of a television show.

According to WXYZ-TV in Detroit, Schembechler was preparing for the taping of the "Big Ten Ticket" show at the studio on Friday morning when he collapsed. He was taken to Providence Hospital in Southfield and later died. He was 77 years old.

Also according to the television station, Schembechler had a pacemaker implanted just two weeks ago. He previously had two major heart attacks and two quadruple bypass surgeries.

During his 21-year tenure at Michigan that ended after the 1989 season, Schembechler posted a 194-48-5 record. His teams won or tied for 13 Big Ten championships. In his 27-year coaching career, he posted a mark of 234-65-8.

His death comes on the eve of Michigan's biggest football game of the season. The second-ranked Wolverines travel to take on top-ranked Ohio State on Saturday. The winner will secure a spot in the BCS national championship game.

3. I live in Columbus, OH
Go get em Bo. This really is sad news.

When his good friend Woody way very sick a stupid reporter
asked Bo if Woody wanted could he sit on the Michigan bench.
Bo said, "That man could sit on my bench any day of the week."

Reporter being stupid then asked, "What if he did not want to sit
on your bench?'

Bo, "I would give him your *^^@!!XX tickets."

Much love Bo from an Ohio State Fan!

13. Ready to watch it live?
Or on TV? I guess they found him in the washroom (which the newspaper delicately referred to as the "powder room", which I think would have made Bo laugh.

16. LOL
That would have cracked him up. I think "powder room" is a bit too delicate for Bo.

6. End Of An Era...
I grew up in Ohio, but now living in Ann Arbor and I normally lurk but had to come out for this announcement.

I'm a loyal Buckeye, class of '83, and I know I'm not alone in stating Bo will be missed. I feel as bad as I did when Woody died. Most assuredly the end of an era.

I almost wish the game could be postponed... Almost.

8. Rest in peace, Coach
Those of us "South of the Border" loved him like our own. My condolences to Bo's family, the U of M and the entire State of Michigan.
See you in the Shoe tomorrow.

11. And those of us north of the border always loved Woody and his antics
I was sad when Woody died, too. Those two helped keep the best rivalry in college sports going, and added their own legends to it.

9. Someone in my office came and told me about a half hour ago
I was just coming to post it.

This should be good incentive to win tomorrow -- as if we needed anymore! They'll really want to win one for Bo, even though none of the current team played under him.

Go Blue and may Bo rest in peace. It's so sad he didn't get to see tomorrow's game and a possible national championship!

12. I'll be rooting for you guys tomorrow
For the first time since 1989. That was the year I became a Spartan.

But I hope they win this one for Bo, his family and all the Wolverine fans. I really do.

You may never hear me say this again as long as I live, but tomorrow, and in Fiesta Bowl for the BCS Championship, GO BLUE!

14. Thanks, Strawman
I appreciate your support. I always root for whoever is playing OSU, even if it's MSU. Of course, when it's Notre Dame I have a problem figuring out who to root for.
