So what the hell are MN Republicans up to now?
http://thinkprogress.org/2006/02/28/the-minnesota-gops-stealth-attack-on-privacy/

-snip-
This week the Minnesota Republican Party is distributing a new CD about a proposed state marriage amendment. Along with flashy graphics, the CD asks people their views on controversial issues such as abortion, gun control, illegal immigration, and so on.

The problem – the CD sends your answers back to headquarters, filed by name, address, and political views. No mention of that in the terms of use. No privacy policy at all. The story concludes: “So if you run the CD in your personal computer, by the end of it, the Minnesota GOP will not only know what you think on particular issues, but also who you are.”

These practices fall way below the standard for today’s polling firms and web sites. The norm for polling firms is to anonymize the data and report only statistical totals. The norm for commercial web sites is to have a privacy policy, with Federal Trade Commission enforcement if the web site breaks its privacy promise.

Without a privacy policy, the state party can tell your views to anyone at all. If you give the “wrong” answers on abortion or other issues, they can tell your boss, members of your church, or anyone else. In fact, these answers could get distributed to campaigns in your town during get-out-the-vote efforts – precisely the place where “wrong” answers can be most damaging.

3. Aw c'mon. Give the MN GOP a break.
They're doing this the nice way. They'd rather send goons to every house in MN to beat the crap out of...er, I mean "rigorously interview" everyone to get the info but they decided against it for some odd reason. So cut them some slack and take your CD quiz like a good little citizen or maybe you'll get a visit from the goon squad after all.

Actually I'd kind of like to take their little CD quiz but only if the questions are fill-in-the-blank. A little box at the end for comments and suggestions would also be nice. ;)

4. Well the positive is...
I'm from Wisconsin... our crazies just passed the Same Sex Ban so that we voters get it as a referendum in November. And believe me damn near every Republican in our state legislator is a whack job neocon.

I won't get a visit from the MN GOP but at the very least I can get a visit from the Wisconsin Gestapo.

6. Sorry to hear that. Looks like I can add WI to the list of states
where I WON'T be vacationing this summer. First the abortion ban in SD (where rapists have more rights than women) and now the Same Sex Ban referendum in WI. WTF is this country coming to anyway?

5. Here's an idea
don't dirty your cd player with it, but write a message on it with a sharpie, and mail it back to them.

8. Here is more on it from MPR
http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2006/03/01/gopcd/

"St. Paul, Minn. — The GOP says they intend to send thousands of the CD-roms to a wide array voters who may be concerned about the issue of gay marriage. The compact discs contain video clips from four of Minnesota's top elected officials. They talk about the cultural dangers of gay marriage, activist judges and why an amendment is needed to keep marriage between one man and one woman...

Republican Party Chair Ron Carey said the video is an attempt to get the DFL Senate to vote on a constitutional amendment to define marriage as only between one man and one woman. At the CD's unveiling, he never mentioned that the party is also using the video to collect information about those who view the video.

To watch the video, a person has to log onto the Internet and punch in an identity code that tells the party who is watching the video. Once the video is going, viewers are asked questions on certain subjects like abortion, the Second Amendment and their party preference.

Party officials distributed test copies of the CDs to the media and have been open with the technology. They were no disclaimers that the data was being collected and transmitted.
