Patty Wetterling opened her run for Congress on Friday, filing papers with federal officials that will enable her to accept campaign contributions.

Wetterling will contend for the DFL Party's endorsement to run against Sixth District U.S. Rep. Mark Kennedy. Kennedy is expected to win Republican backing today for his reelection bid at the party's district convention in Big Lake.

"I am honored and excited about the possibilities ahead in our efforts to build a safer, better world for our children and families," Wetterling, 54, of St. Joseph, said in a statement Friday. "I will be working hard to win the endorsement of the DFL Party and am grateful for this opportunity."

Although she has never run for office -- and has been determinedly nonpartisan in all her activities -- Wetterling for years has been one of Minnesota's most famous and respected citizens.

Screech Kennedy, I hope you've enjoyed your time playing congressman - it's time for someone who actually gives a rip about the people of Minnesota to actually do the job now.

I think she would be just absolutely fabulous. She certainly has the name recognition, and the Repuke smear machine would have a very hard time smearing her.

By referring to her as a candidate for the "sympathy vote". The cons are stating that this is evidence that democrats do not have a serious candidate to put forward, that Patti Wetterling does not have the experience or qualifications necessary for public office. I believe this strategy will fail. She has been an activist for over 12 years and has lobbied both state and federal governments on a variety of issues including gun control and the Amber Alert legislation.

What experience did Screech Kennedy have in 2000 when he ran? What a totally circular argument!

I don't think people are going to cotton to 'Pubs pickin' on Patty.
