Another encounter with my 14 year old niece
Last week I recounted Shannon's running into Pawlenty at the movies

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=160x779

I'm not sure how we got on the subject tonight but it went something like this:

Shannon: I don't care about politics. There's no difference between
Bush and Kerry (I think she gets that from my brother.)

Me: If Bush is reelected you'll care in a few years when you and your little friends are being drafted.

Sh: They won't draft girls.

Me: Sure they will. Equal protection clause of the Constitution - no way around it.

Sh: But, but, but.. Bush LET 9/11 happen (I don't know where she got that we haven't discussed it), he lied about that stupid war.

Me: You care about that?

Sh: Yes.

Me: Then you care about politics.

Sh: You know Bush wants to pass a law that says gay people can't get married.

Me: He wants a Constitutional amendment that says that. And, your buddy Pawlenty, who you thought was so nice, wants the same thing for Minnesota.

Sh: That is soooo gay (:wtf:)

Me: I wouldn't use that expression in this instance.

Sh: You know what I mean. If I run into Pawlenty again I'm going to tell him that's stupid. Why don't you take me to Washington, I'll stand in front of the White House with a microphone and tell Bush he's stupid. (That's my girl!)

3. I'm not sure whether...
...I should be comforted by this exchange, or scared to death.

No, really, I'm serious!

4. "Sooo Gay!"
Yes, that is a current expression. My favorite instance was when some of my kid's pre-teen friends were talking about a movie and were aghast at the excessive (heterosexual) kissing and one said, "Ewwww! That was sooo Gay!" I talked with them about that expression and they aren't anti-gay, but seem not to make the connection.

5. I know - the expression bothered me when I first heard them use it
They apparently aren't using it in an anti-Gay way - which I take some comfort in. But I still cringe when I hear it. I only hope it will soon be replaced by another expression.
