Sen. Marc Dann calls tax accusation a 'dud'

By STEVE EDER
BLADE STAFF WRITER

COLUMBUS - Attorney General Jim Petro's office took legal action last month against one of his prime critics, State Sen. Marc Dann, who is running to take over Mr. Petro's job next year.

Mr. Petro's office, on behalf of the Ohio Department of Taxation, filed a lien against Mr. Dann on Nov. 22, claiming his political foe in 2002 failed to pay $561.74 in taxes for employees in his suburban Youngstown legal practice in 2002.

Mr. Dann called the accusation a "dud" during a Statehouse news conference yesterday morning, saying he did not owe any money and that he expected the lien to be lifted because it was filed in error.

Mr. Dann - an outspoken critic of GOP leadership and Mr. Petro's handling of the investment scandal at the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation - has been under siege from Republicans, who have called him a "hypocrite" and said he is "unworthy" to serve as the state's next attorney general...

1. State Repukes jumping on Dann
with both feet.

Here's part of Bennett's statement that I pulled off the GOP site blog http://ohiogop.blogs.com/

****
“Sen. Dann has spent much of the past year setting himself up as the paragon of public ethics, but his own record is now exposing him as a hypocrite. He owes each of his constituents an apology for failing to live up to the high standard he so piously sets for everyone else. I expect him to use his personal funds to send an apology, along with the public records he released to the press, to each of his constituents explaining why an unethical, delinquent, tax-evading, law-breaking divorce lawyer should represent this state as its top law enforcer, much less as one of its lawmakers.
Oh, and, senator, there’s more where this came from.”

Called him everything except the 'L Word.' :eyes:

3. 'We Were Wrong'
TODAY'S CHUCKLE
'We Were Wrong'
from the gop blog in July

"It's clear the Republicans really are trying to make inroads with black voters," says Merle Black, a political scientist at Emory University in Atlanta and co-author of The Rise of Southern Republicans, in today's USA Today.

The comment follows a speech by Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman to the NAACP's national convention on Thursday, in which he acknowledged "some Republicans gave up on winning the African-American vote... I'm here today as the Republican chairman to tell you we were wrong."

The party of Lincoln and the African American community have a proud history together. (but not a "long and proud history"--TBA) Our party was founded to eliminate slavery, and our first Republican President was Abraham Lincoln, the Great Emancipator. It was the Republican Party that led the effort to pass the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments. ...

And it is George W. Bush, a Republican president, who has appointed more minorities to top positions than any president in American history; who has tripled the funds we provide to relieve AIDS in Africa; and who has an agenda to spread equal opportunity in America and freedom around the world, building on the legal equality and Civil Rights Legacy that everyone in this room fought for.
...
results: 2% approval rating with Black Americans

4. Ohio's economy continues to grow
Ohio's economy continues to grow Nov 30
Economic conditions across the region showed "gradual improvement across a broad array of industries" over the last six weeks, the Cleveland branch of the Federal Reserve said Wednesday. (Business First)

Other highlights from the Fed's report:

Manufacturers in the district reported moderate increases in production, and expected orders to continue to accelerate.
Steel and auto makers also ramped up production. (but announce 55,000 layoffs)
Hiring in the manufacturing sector remains moderate. (moderate??? that's good?)
