From ODP - Action Alert! Eric Fingerhut Needs 30 Seconds of Your Time
Copied from an ODP Email:

FYI - From the Eric Fingerhut for Senate Campaign,

Please take 30 seconds (yes, 30 seconds) and go to http://www.dailykos.com/story/2004/5/12/115513/448 and vote in an online poll that really does mean something. If that doesn't let you vote for some reason, try http://tinyurl.com/2zx8h

This influential blogging site I'm steering you toward is named the DailyKos.com; it's a blog (or weblog) gets 450,000 hits per day. It began conducting an online poll YESTERDAY, asking visitors to recommend a U.S. Senate race (with Eric Fingerhut's, on which I work, being one of the choices) which they should target. Based on poll results and a couple other factors, the winning candidates will receive free online FUNDRAISING support from the Daily Kos organization. (We're not sure when voting closes, so please do this now.) If we raise enough money, we ARE going to win. (In fact, a Roll Call article reports today that support for our opponent, George Voinovich, is below 50 percent in a new poll!) That said, raising money has been our biggest challenge. I need your help right now to help win this online poll. As I type this message to you, we have a 36% to 18% lead over our next opponent, a Missouri U.S. Senate candidate, BUT the lead is slipping ever so slightly. Please go now and vote. And forward this message to whomever you can to help out. (Needless to say this is NOT a chain letter, and I wouldn't be taking up your time if this weren't very important.)

Trying to get to 1000 by the end of the day... Thanks for your help.

Best,

Kim Chapple, Fingerhut for Senate Communications Director

14. You gotta let us know when the bumperstickers are available
There are some eager DUers all over Ohio who would proudly display them.

5. Done!
Fingerhut with 1006 votes (39%).

I would love it if Voinovich had to spend some money fighting for his seat, rather than funding other campaigns. This could get interesting!

6. Voinovich below 50% !!!! Glory, glory, hallelujah!
From the Daily Kos links you cited. Former two term governor George must have not impressed too many Ohioans to get numbers like this.

Note: I think "Penn, Schoen & Berland" is a Democratic Party
internal polling organization.
(Caveat Electron: Don't believe everything you read on the internet)

OH-Sen: Voinovich under 50 percent?

This may be shaping up to be "good news Ohio" day. First we get ARG's poll showing Kerry leading Bush 50-43 (or 49-42-2 with Nader). Now I've stumbled across a DSCC poll that suggests Ohio GOoPer senator George Voinovich might be (and I mean "might be") vulnerable.
DSCC poll by Penn, Schoen & Berland. 4/18-19. MoE 3.4%

Voinovich (R) 47
Fingerhut (D) 32
Undecided 19
It's a partisan poll, so adjust expectations accordingly. But if independent polling confirms Voinovich is under 50 percent, we may actually have a race on our hands.
Note, Fingerhut has name recognition of about, oh, zero. And this race is clearly out of the DSCC's targeted list. But if Bush continues to fail in the state he could drag Voinovich down with him, forcing the GOP to defend this seat. Best case, Voinovich would have to spend some all of his $5 million COH on himself. Worst case, the NRSC would have to send money his way, rather than battleground seats in NH, SC, FL, LA, AK and elsewhere.

7. Fingerhut has alienated many with his ludicrous anti-gun owner stances.
Sure, some NE Ohioans like that, but much of the rest of the state prefers individual liberties on that issue. I will vote for neither Fingerhut or Voinovich. They are both authoritarian and not worthy of my consideration. However, since Fingerhut is new, I will give him a chance to redeem himself before November.

8. You don't speak for the rest of the state, FatSlob.
One of the things that I am glad about this year is that people are going to vote on real issues like jobs and the economy than wedge issues.

10. I speak only for myself.
As of now, Eric is no better than Diane Feinstein or Mike DeWineor Voinovich. I vote based upon my conscience. My conscience says that Eric Fingerhut is an authoritarian. I will likely have to sit out the vote for Senator. My ideal candidate would be a Democrat who supported all individual rights, not just some. Someday my saviour will arrive.

11. wedge issues
I'm sorry if I lump a silly "wedge issue" like the right to keep and bear arms for defense and security in there with "real issues" like jobs and the economy.

Sen. Fingerhut is not just anti-gun, he is fanatically anti-gun. He called anyone who would carry a concealed weapon for protection -- such as I do every day -- a nut job.

He introduced an appalling so-called assault weapons ban so broad that nearly half of what I own would be banned. I would have to move to northern Kentucky to avoid prison, because it doesn't grandfather possession of standard capacity magazines. The day it went into effect I would be guilty of dozens of felonies.

Sorry if I take that a bit personally.

9. Republicans aren't happy with him.
Edited on Fri May-14-04 03:32 PM by nownow
Remember -- he stood up to Bush*. Ohio is one of those states -- especially my (SW) corner -- where devoted Republicans vote en masse, and would vote for Bush* if he were seen sodomizing a pig live on television.

They do love the Shrub. Voinovich, that evil SOB, actually had the nerve to vote his conscience and stick with it for once. How dared he?

I really think this is why he's falling off. He stood up to the Dim Son and lost his reliable constituency.

Plenty of Dems voted for him, to put him up there, and always voted heavily for him for governor because he came off as a fairly pragmatic moderate (I don't want to get into an argument about how he governed -- that's how he won the elections). There won't be enough of them voting for him this time to overcome the hard-rightists who are still pissed at him for standing up to Bush*.
