You are correct that Singel's stint as acting governor was not memorable.
Singel always struck me as someone who was connected into some shady power brokers. For example, he was hired by the Hershey Trust to help sell Hershey Foods. The people from the Trust who hired him for that were later removed, at the insistence of a judge.
Singel also was hired to help try to get millions of dollars of State tax money to fund a racetrack for rich people to drive their Porsches around in circles at high speeds. That racetrack is proposed a couple thousand feet from the Appalachian Trail in the Poconos.
Singel is currently being sued by his employer for trying to steal company files and clients, in violation of his contract. He wants to take clients with him to a new firm he is founding.
In comparison, Bob Casey always struck me as a clean politician who does try to do what he thinks is right. One small example is that he tried to make the big State pension funds unveil how they chose their financial advisors and to open up the pension funds to audits by his office. He had to go to court on this matter as auditor general. Anyone who has followed the news in Philadelphia knows that there is a connection between political contributions and financial advisors receiving contracts.
As much as I disagree with Casey on abortion, it does show that he is a man of principle. It is much easier for a Democratic politician to be pro-choice or to shut up on the issue.
I think I'd like to see Jack Wagner as Lt. Governor in Rendell's next term.
