I fear Pittsburgh is going to be Republican very soon...
Murphy has botched things so badly and given so much red meat to the local wingnutters it will be hard to be elected with the big D after your name in these parts.

People in my office like to listen to KDKA and it's pretty much "GOP= GOOD, DEMOCRAT=EVIL" all day. The morning show really isn't too political, but Pintek's the typical "I call myself a libertarian but I hate every Democrat", followed by Rush, then the grotesque in more ways than one Honsberger who makes Rush sound like something from Air America.

At this point I don't think Rendell is going to get re-elected since it seems every day KDKA is bashing him for some alleged transgression. I hope he takes some role in the Kerry administration because I can't see how he can overcome having the zillion watt AM powerhouse bashing him every day from now till reelection time.

1. I am curious...
how the steel tariffs will play for Bush in Pittsburgh.

USX just had its firt profit in God knows how long. I am sure the union people are not happy that they were taken away, but at the same time, were grateful for them to be there.

As far as Rendell, he is screwing himself in a way. I don't feel too badly for a man that cuts everything like library funding, and welfare services, but raises the budget for the gov's mansion 6%.

I think he would lose reelection if it were today.

Pittsburgh becoming Repub...it's hard to imagine, but Murphy is taking a ton of heat. He has had his chance and at least giving another Dem a chance would be nice.

2. It may not matter
Bush screwed the steel industry hard, but the damned radio show hosts here won't blame Bush for a goddamned thing and spend all their time beating on Kerry.

The only person on the air here who tells it like it is would be Lynn Cullen but WPTT's signal is so weak I gotta spend 15 min. farting around with my radio at work to be able to hear it.

3. It's the same in Philly
Right-wing radio rules everywhere, but that's only because Republicans need to be told what to think so that they don't have to think for themselves. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

4. Maybe
but I don't think Pittsburgh folks are going to be too Dem-friendly after Murphy's complete and total screwing of the city's economy gives the wingnuts a large stick to beat Dems with.

5. not necessarily bad
While I agree that Murphy and others add to the GOP rhetoric in the area, it's not really Democratic policy that created Pittsburgh's mess. For sure the leadership needed to be accountable. Republican leadership in PA hasn't helped. As for the AM dial. Yeah that sucks, but it is everywhere. I think most people differentiate between local and national politics anyway.

7. That's the bottom line
right wing radio rules. Until we can get air america on the air down here they have a monopoly on opinion.

6. I'm not sure about that.
I was born and raised in Pgh. Moved after 45 years becaue of a job transfer. All the prople I talk to that still live there are very unhappy with Bush. Some are a bit surprising too. One is a minister and Dr. of Psychology. Both he and his wife have told me they think GWB is insane! They're very unhappy with the attack on Iraq, and think his policy that the Churches should take care of the poor, not the Gov't, simply won't work. There are lots of complaints about the way BushCo passed a Medicare bill that isn't going to do much for the people it was supposed to help..... BTW, the people I'm talking about all voted for GWB in 2000 because they were so disturbed by Clinton's actions. And they ALL vow NEVER to do that again!!!

I hope what I'm hearing is the majority.

9. They are two different people
Tom Murphy is a Democrat and the Mayor of Pittsburgh. He previously served as a State Representative.

Tim Murphy is a Republican and a Congressman who represents Pennsylvania's 18th district. He is also a psychologist with a PhD and a former State Senator
