class warfare - tax the poor
A Senate committee in South Carolina, the reddest of redneck states, just announced a package of legislation for next year to calm the anti-tax revolt. It would raise the sales tax by 2% to 7% - one of the highest in the nation - and use that to cut property taxes, which fund schools, in half. Missing in the debate is any discussion of regressive taxation as a public policy. Somebody making $7 an hour is going to be hit hard by this 40% increase in the sales tax so that everyone owning boats, $40,000 SUVs and second houses won't feel the pain.
I don't understand why the Democrats run for cover every time they are accused of 'class warfare.' Class warfare at the ballot box is what this country needs to take our destiny back from the corporations and top 1%.

1. Because they are rich
and because they are hypocrites they don't want to lose any money, just like republicans.
Haven't you figured it out? These type of coward Dem's are hypocrites they just USED the poor and poverty issues to get votes. When in power they support their own,the rich.

Truth be told the rich owe poorer america and america owes the poor nations for their wealth.Nobody gets rich on their own two feet that is a myth. Most wealthy people in america have INHERITED it..
If the rich don't pony up and pay back the poor for their lives of luxury and privileges then ..well remember the french revolution?
The rich need to be reminded they too are vulnerable, lest they become arrogant bubble people who become self indulgent, overweening ly ambitious ,utopian , dictators over the lives of the lower classes. The wealthy corporates already control too much of our lives ,they can make us pee in a cup for a job, make us dress the way they want, make us work for practically nothing and no healthcare,..How much is enough for the rich to have?(funny rich people do not know how to ask that question) So it is up to the lower classes and unions to draw the enough is enough line for them.If we do not limit how much the rich can have, they BUY the government..and look they already have bought it the hypocrite Dem's that shy away from class war are bought, and this government of the rich for the rich is as rigid and controlling and psychopathic as a corporation is.

2. For us here in Charleston County
the tax will not be 7%. It will be 8.5. We're already at 6.5.

3. I agree, this sucks.

As you said, the sales tax is a regressive tax. It hits the poor SO much harder than it does those with money.

4. Regressive Tax
Let's see. Because property values have gone thru the roof especially for those that build along the coast, property taxes have gone up. This means if you sell your house now you get a whole lot more than you paid for it but in the mean time you don't want to pay a tax that reflects the increased value of your property. They want a free ride or what?
Would they be more amenable to a lowering of the property tax provided they paid a capital gains tax upon the sale of their property? Nah, didn't think so.

6. And the poor get nothing back from it.
No property to eliminate a tax on. Their landlord will get a break but you can bet it won't get passed on.

Everybody pays sales tax, not everybody owns property.

And this proposal does absolutely NOTHING to lower or eliminate the 'personal property tax' on cars, trucks, and mobile homes that has to be paid every year.

5. they took down the rebel flag from the state house because
"it didn't look right," and they raise the sales tax 40% to 7% . . . why, because they've changed the state motto from dum spiro, spero to "hooray for me and fuck you."
