Great Public Forum May 12th in Austin! Robert Jensen and R. Mahajan.
The North by Northwest Democrats and the Yellow Dog Democrats Cordially
invite you to listen to two voices against the War
“Speaking to Power”

Wednesday, May 12 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm
at the University United Methodist Church at 24th and Guadalupe

Robert Jensen, Journalist: Robert Jensen joined the UT faculty in 1992 after completing his Ph.D. in media law and ethics in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota. Prior to his academic career, he worked as a professional journalist for a decade. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in media law, ethics, and politics. Jensen also is director of the Senior Fellows Program, the honors program of the UT College of Communication. In his research, Jensen draws on a variety of critical theories. In more recent work, he has addressed questions of race through a critique of white privilege and institutionalized racism. In addition to teaching and research, Jensen writes for popular media, both alternative and mainstream. His opinion and analytic pieces on such subjects as foreign policy, politics, and race have appeared in papers around the country. He also is involved in a number of activist groups working against U.S. military and economic domination of the rest of the world.

Rahul Mahajan, Physicist: Rahul Mahajan received his Bachelor's in Mathematics from Caltech and his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a long-time campus and community activist, at the local and national level. He is a founding member of the Nowar Collective and serves on the National Board of Peace Action. His first book, "The New Crusade: America's War on Terrorism" (April 2002, Monthly Review Press), has been described as "mandatory reading for anyone who wants to get a handle on the war on terrorism." His latest book, "Full Spectrum Dominance: U.S. Power in Iraq and Beyond," just came out from Seven Stories Press. Mahajan writes frequently for mainstream and alternative media, in print and on the Web. His publications include articles in USA Today, Newsday, the Baltimore Sun, the Dallas Morning News, the Houston Chronicle, The Hindu (one of India's largest papers), the Jordan Times, and the Mideast Times in Cairo.

2. I recommend this highly. If you live in Austin you should go
I went to see Rahul's talk last night at UT, and as always the man has incredible insight and analysis. And for those of you who may read blogs, his Empire Notes is very good
http://www.empirenotes.org/

Rahul was involved in the forefront of the first "Stop the War on Iraq" movement. I'm talking about the movement to lift the sanctions that were killing 5,000 Iraqi children a month. Way before bushco even came into power. So Iraq is a subject Rahul is very knowledgeable about. He was in Fallujah when the Americans attacked this past April.

One point he made, and I had forgotten about this, is that bu$h on the one year anniversary of "Mission Accomplished" tried to defend the banner by saying that the US had accomplished the mission of removing Saddam. And that Iraq no longer had torture and rape rooms. It was now free of a brutal dictator. Well in retrospect the bu$h spoke too soon. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
