Is Vilma Luna running for district court?
from South Texas Chisme

Rumor has it that Mikal Watts will hire Jack Hunter to get him off the 94th State District Court so that Vilma Luna can take his seat while Joseph Barrientos, Gonzales' son, takes Vilma's seat.

1. I wish Vilma Luna would retire to private life
If she gives up the House seat that would be great. With her record, I don't think I'd want her on that court seat either.

2. I think Vilma would be a very good judge. Her deficiencies as a state rep
are the result of her mistaken belief that she can best protect her constituents by being the one Democratic Latina who will work with Craddick and his GOP thugs. Her godawful votes are not an expression of her values, but the result of compromises she has made. I don't approve of her tactics, and I don't agree with her votes on so many issues, but she would not vote so unforgivably poorly if her conscience were her only guide.

With all that said, I think she would be a fine judge because the judicial role would not entail the type of horse-trading on votes that has so badly marred her legislative record.

4. You should get her on record saying that
She should at least take a stand on the illegal redistricting plan that DeLay rammed before the Texas State Legislature, that she voted for. A good "I was wrong on that vote" would get her off to a good start. She has to make amends for siding with the enemy on that one. It didn't do a bit of good for her constituents or the rest of Texans who were decidedly against the redistricting.

5. If she's running for judge (which I kind of doubt, but who knows), I think
she would publicly admit that she was wrong in voting for the plan (because she is no longer having to play ball with Craddick). If she's staying at the lege, I'm sure she will stick to the party (i.e., the GOP) line.

Privately, she'd tell you something about how she cut the deal the save CHIPs or some similar program or priority in exchange for her disgusting vote, and that Craddick had someone else lined up to give him the necessary votes if she had refused him (because that's the kind of thing she has always told me whenever I have questioned her about her batshit crazy votes -- she's not my rep, BTW, but I have spoken with her many times).

It's hard for me to be fair to Vilma because I think her choices have almost all been wrong wrong wrong for Texas, but she has convinced me that she really believes her own bullshit when she says did what she needed to do to achieve other goals important to her constituents.

Whether or not she'd be a good judge, she almost couldn't be a worse judge than a state rep.

7. She's got a terrible voting record, but she absolutely won't retire.
She's got her eyes on Ortiz's seat in Congress (and she's just the DINO to take Ortiz's place without any change in SOP). Plus, she polls strong as horseradish so she'd likely win whatever office she runs for.

Moving her out of the state legislature (where she makes the law) to the bench (where she'd only be trying to enforce the law) would be a step in the right direction. Her talent for compromise (if you want to call it a talent), would also suit her better on the bench than it suits us in the state house. In fact, I think she would probably make a better judge than the judge she'd be seeking to replace (who's not a bad guy).

3. I certainly agree that Hunter isn't going to run, but I want to doubt the
rest of this. Still, STC was right about Shamsie so who am I to question STC? Nevertheless, I can't really see Joseph Barrientos moving into Vilma's district. Wouldn't that mean their kids would have to transfer schools? I can't hardly imagine them up-rooting the kids from those schools to facilitate a run for state rep., but I've been wrong before.

Who's behind STC?
