After being released in Houston, Diane Wison, co-founder of Code Pink and environmental activist was jailed on old charges in Victoria. She is also being asked to run for Land Commissioner on the Green Party ticket. Here's the note I received today:
Hi, everyone,
While we are getting ready to enjoy the holidays, our hero and CodePink co-founder Diane Wilson sits in prison in the Victoria County Jail. She needs our letters and cards of support desperately.
I have been out of touch this month because December is my busiest month of the year at the gallery, so I had no idea that Diane had been jailed on another charge after being arrested for unfurling a banner when Cheney spoke at the Galleria DeLay rally two weeks ago. She knew that if she set foot in Texas she might go to jail on old charges from a protest against Dow for their involvement in the Bhopal, India accident years ago. See Molly Ivins article about her for more info:
http://www.freepress.org/columns/display/1/2005/1240If you have met Diane or saw her on NOW a couple of weeks ago, you know that she stands up for what she believes is right in a big way, which makes her a thorn in the side of big corrupt politicians and corporations. Certainly she is another political prisoner now.
I got this email from Don Cook of the Green Party yesterday:
>
> Charlie Mauch and I went to see Diane Wilson Sunday. Very depressing. No windows in the Victoria County Jail. Visitors and she have to peer at each other through small rectangular porthole with glass six inches thick while talking on closed phone line. One small, round metal stool fastened to the floor on the visitors side. One 45 minute visit with maximum of two visitors at 4:15 pm on Friday and another visit, same parameters, 4:30 pm on Sunday. A friend of hers had come to see her, and

> With good time, she may complete her four month sentence from Calhoun County by the middle of March. But it has got to be a drag sitting in the Victoria County Jail. She can't even get any books to read! The Harris County Green Party sent her a card with 26 signatures and short messages on it. It would probably be a good idea to encourage as many people as possible to write and send cards to cheer her up. Her mailing address is:

> BTW, Charlie Mauch had been talking to her and she's thinking about running as the Green Party candidate for Land Commissioner here in Texas next year. The deadline for filing is January 2, 2006, but all we need is her signature on some forms we'll turn in. We can take care of the rest. In fact, we are not asking her to do anything for the campaing beyound lending us her name, although she is welcome to run as active a campaign as she wishes. If there is anything you could do to help her see her way clear to be our candidate, it would be greatly appreciated.

Please take some time today to send Diane a card with a message of inspiration or a thank you for her committment to what we all stand for! This is the one thing that you can do to make the life of a fellow activist a little less miserable this Christmas. Diane has done so much for all of us. It is time for some thank you's!
