Heads up, non-Christian Texas DUers - the GOP has declared war
At Saturday morning's prayer meeting, (Texas Republican) party leader Tina Benkiser assured them that God was watching over the two-day confab.

"He is the chairman of this party," she said against a backdrop of flags and a GOP seal with its red, white and blue logo.

The party platform, adopted Saturday, declares "America is a Christian nation" and affirms that "God is undeniable in our history and is vital to our freedom."

"We pledge to exert our influence toward a return to the original intent of the First Amendment and dispel the myth of the separation of church and state," it says.

OH, NO, THEY DIDN'T!!

This should be considered a red alert. Anyone know if a strong affirmation of religious freedom is being proposed for the Democratic state party platform? Cowtown or Bust.

2. "...dispel the myth of of the separation of church and state...?
Myth? Are you kidding me? Maybe if these dolts actually read the statements of the founding fathers, they'd know that a theocracy is just what the founders were trying to avoid. Oy.

3. Jesus!
Every time I get comfortable in my skin about being Christian, these idiots go & do something that make me want to renounce it! :grr: :grr: :grr: Hopefully, the more wacko they get, the more the middle-of-the-road folks will understand that the fundies are truly nuts!

5. These idiots aren't real Christians, said the Jew
They sure don't represent the teachings of Jesus as I understand him. Shalom!

13. I've left my church because of them.
Even though my pastor was very liberal who had a brother who died from AIDS. I just couldn't take the "religious" people in the public eye or more importantly, the conservative ones at my church. Now I am churchless and one lost Christian, if I even can call myself that anymore.

14. I hear you!
It's not fun being without a church "home." I was attending church 2 years ago & then the pastor went off on the whole "wives must submit to their husbands; women can't hold positions of authority over men" garbage & I said "See ya!"

I do my best to practice what Jesus taught, to be tolerant, care for others, pray for healing & peace. Sometimes, though, I just get so worn down by the fundies & their antics that I wonder if it's worth it.

6. I am inclined to agree.
Sometimes I think it might be sufficient just to sit back and wait for them to implode under the weight of their own stupidity.

4. A little background for the newbies
There's this outfit called Wallbuilders that's based in Aledo (between Ft. Worth and Weatherford, just south of I-30). Its founder, David Barton, claimed that the Founding Fathers supported the idea of America as a "Christian" nation, but his writings were repeatedly debunked by religious freedom activists as making up quotes for some of the Founding Fathers.

But fundamentalist and evangelical Christians everywhere turned a deaf ear to the evidence that Barton was all wet. Now he's the Vice-Chair of the Texas GOP. Happy happy, joy joy.

10. I think we only have to elect a new vice chair...
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 04:01 PM by VelmaD
if someone decides to run against the current vice-chair, if a woman wins the chair position (then we have to have a male vice-chair for balance), or if the current vice-chair resigns that position.

11. I think technically we have to have an election in any case
Even if it is soviet-style with only one candidate.

12. Dispel the myth of Separation of Church and State?
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 08:10 PM by Maestro
That was ONE of the founding tenets on which this country was founded. Whether you are a Christian or not that statement is disgusting and scary. But at least the article mentioned Guckert.

15. Couldn't resist finding the lyrics for Dear God by XTC
Dear god,
Hope you got the letter,
And I pray you can make it better down here.
I dont mean a big reduction in the price of beer,
But all the people that you made in your image,
See them starving on their feet,
cause they dont get enough to eat

From god,
I cant believe in you.

Dear god,
Sorry to disturb you,
But I feel that I should be heard loud and clear.
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears,
And all the people that you made in your image,
See them fighting in the street,
cause they cant make opinions meet,
About god,
I cant believe in you.

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the devil too!

Dear god,
Dont know if you noticed,
But your name is on a lot of quotes in this book.
Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look,
And all the people that you made in your image,
Still believing that junk is true.
Well I know it aint and so do you,
Dear god,
I cant believe in,
I dont believe in,

I wont believe in heaven and hell.
No saints, no sinners,
No devil as well.
No pearly gates, no thorny crown.
Youre always letting us humans down.
The wars you bring, the babes you drown.
Those lost at sea and never found,
And its the same the whole world round.
The hurt I see helps to compound,
That the father, son and holy ghost,
Is just somebodys unholy hoax,
And if youre up there youll perceive,
That my hearts here upon my sleeve.
If theres one thing I dont believe in...

Its you,
Dear god.
