FLDS updates--things that make you go hmmm
First off is a decision from an San Antonio court, with a hearing set for next Friday:
http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/metro/stories/MYSA.051408.1A.FLDS.38989e4.html

The article makes reference to a petition filed by Gerry Goldstein....almost 80 pages long & quite compelling to read, btw, especially the part where the State knew the phone call was a fake BEFORE they got a search & arrest warrant. "Oops" doesn't begin to cover it.

Also from the Salt Lake Tribune (although the news first appeared in Sunday's San Antonio paper), statements from MH/MR workers detailing the conditions they witnessed & experienced in San Angelo. Read 'em & weep, folks.

1. The State of Texas doesnt treat anyone with respect
Not children, not mothers, not employees, not inmates, youthful or otherwise. So it's no surprise to me they screwed this one up too. The only thing you can say about this round up is at least they didn't go Waco on them.

2. The State was hoping they would fry themselves a la Waco
which is why they showed up with paramilitary law enforcement (SWAT, tank, etc). The State intended to provoke a violent response so they could slaughter them all & then smear them in the press afterwards. (standard operating procedure for the government) Unfortunately for the State, the only weapons discovered were about 6 hunting rifles locked in a gun safe. (Hunting rifles, on a ranch? OMG THE KIDS ARE IN DANGER :eyes: )

I'm so glad that Goldstein is on the case. I can't wait for his filings to get heard.

3. Raid, aftermath's early cost: $7.5 million
AAS 5/16/08
Raid, aftermath's early cost: $7.5 million
Senate panel to examine expenses of largest child removal in U.S.

The massive child welfare operation that began in early April with a state raid of a West Texas ranch owned by a polygamous sect cost nearly $7.5 million in the first 19 days, according to records from Gov. Rick Perry's office.

A spokeswoman for Perry cautioned that the numbers — obtained through the Texas Public Information Act — are preliminary and unaudited, and Perry's office has yet to release official costs.

But the numbers do reveal clues about the financial impact of what Texas officials have said is the largest removal of children in U.S. history.

Expenses have ranged from housing and feeding more than 400 children in shelters in San Angelo to busing them to foster care around the state. And the costs are likely to grow; it could be a year before Child Protective Services and the courts sort out whether the children — removed because of what state officials say is a pattern of abuse — can return to their parents.

:wow:

4. And to think the Church offered to pick up all these costs
by having the children & mothers remain at the ranch after the men moved away. Oh well.

5. Course the Southern Poverty Law Center tracks these folks as a
hate group, but you knew that. Right?

http://www.splcenter.org/blog/2008/05/14/racist-flds-cult-surfaces-in-new-location/

The Southern Poverty Law Center placed the FLDS on its hate group list in 2005 for its racist beliefs, including the notion that black people have been cursed by the devil and are an inferior race. The FLDS is a breakaway sect from the 13-million member Mormon Church based in Salt Lake City, which disavowed polygamy in 1890 as a condition of Utah gaining statehood, and which began allowing blacks to become priests in 1978 ¬— a move that Jeffs called a victory for the devil.
