What do you all think about Lloyd Doggett?
I met him several years ago and I really liked him.
I emailed him about the voter fraud and he actually emailed me back, even though I am not in his district. He has an outstanding bio and I think he is great--and, he is on our side.

Dear xxxx:

Thank you for your kind message regarding my work in Congress.
Your kind words really made my day! Thank you also for sharing
your concerns about voting irregularities in the Presidential
elections. I appreciate your input and share your concerns.

We must ensure that the voices of all voters are being heard. A
growing number of election reform and computer security experts
have rightfully raised serious concerns about the integrity of
electronic voting systems. The reliability of election results should
not be jeopardized by computer malfunction or other irregularities.

You will be pleased to learn that I am a sponsor of H.R. 2239, the
Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act. H.R. 2239
would require that all voting machines produce an actual paper
record that voters can view to check the accuracy of their vote,
would require ballot recounts in some jurisdictions, and would
allow citizen appeals of those recounts. Unfortunately, more than a
year after the legislation was introduced and with the election
behind us, the House Republican Leadership has still refused to
permit this legislation to come before the House for consideration.
Rest assured I will remain mindful of your concerns should this
legislation be introduced in the challenging Congress beginning
next year.

Please keep me advised of any federal matters on which I may be
of assistance.

Sincerely,
Lloyd

1. He was my rep before Delay's redistricting scam
Very liberal, more than his public statements make him seem, even. Very crafty politician, too. Tom Delay's redistricting planned centered around getting rid of Doggett. He split Austin, notoriously liberal, into three districts. He combined Dogget's old district (mine) with ultra-conservative Houston, he combined west Austin with the conservative part of San Antonio, and he attached south Austin to the Rio Grande Valley-- a Democratic district but overwhelmingly Hispanic. Doggett beat an Hispanic Democrat in the primaries, and then an Hispanic Republican in the general, in a district that is I think 70% Hispanic.

Proves two things-- first, the Hispanic voting block in Texas can see through Delay's schemes, and second, Doggett is very good.

3. I also got perrymandered
For years, whenever I would read about rethug congressman Lamar Smith, I would think how lucky I was not to live in that idiot's district. Now, through no fault of my own, I do.

4. Best Congressman I ever had
Edited on Sun Dec-12-04 10:52 PM by sonias
And I still consider him my Congressman even though I too got Perry/Gerrymandered. He's my Congressman in exile.

I felt so strongly that Lloyd had to go back to Congress after the gerrymandering redistricting, that I volunteered for him during the primary election a lot, and a bit during the general election. The real race for him was in the primary since it was a newly redrawn district. He is my Mom's Congressman now. My Mom lives in the Rio Grande Valley.

Lloyd is a good man and so his whole family. One of his daughters Lisa is a doctor and works at the People's Community Clinic here in Austin. This is doing work for the poor and that is truly a giving thing. Those are real family values.

Lloyd and his wife Libby are about to be grandparents too.

I love Lloyd.

5. He hung the moon, as far as I'm concerned!
He's no longer our congressman since we moved to Hays County but years ago, when he was in private practice, I called his law office for legal advice. I expected that if he could even meet with me, it would involve legal fees, but instead, his secretary took the information over the phone, consulted with Lloyd, then called me back with the advice and said to call back if anything else developed. I was impressed!

6. I grew up in his neighborhood in Austin
This was back when he was a state senator. I remember him and his wife riding his bike around the neighborhood with his kids on the back. He would always stop and talk with you and really listened. A really good guy.

This was before the Killer Bees. He has only gotten better as far as I'm concerned.

7. Wow, it sounds like he actually read your note!
I bitch at my rep all the time and only get form letters back.

Although now I've been switched over to Eddie Bernice, so we'll see.

8. Doggett ROCKS!!!
I love Lloyd Doggett! I love him even more because Delay loathes him so much. It's true that one of Delay's biggest priorities when redistricting was to squeeze Doggett out. I fought hard for Doggett in the primaries and in the general election, and I was ecstatic when he won. TAKE THAT, DELAY!!!

Doggett generally responds to every message I send him, sometimes with a form letter if it's a popular issue and sometimes with a personal note if it's not. But he responds, at least, and each time I agree with his response and his actions in Congress.

GO DOGGETT!!!

I'm getting stuck with McCaul. :puke:

Living here in a county that went overwhelmingly Democratic, my only Democratic representative is Gonzalo Barrientos. x(

12. Lloyd Doggett
is my representative and that is the only bright spot in still being an Austin resident. I will be moving to Seattle soon and I will miss having him as my rep. He's an oddity among pols - a genuinely good and thoughtful person.

13. He does his own grocery shopping, too.
I was registering voters in front of Book People one evening, and Lloyd walked by on his way to Whole Foods to buy groceries. He stopped by and said hi. He's a fine man.

14. I'm not in the least bit surprised
Lloyd Doggett is a normal, albeit especially fine, human. Unlike the strange beasts occupying the White House.

Damn, I am blessed! Jim McDermott. If I have to trade in Lloyd Doggett, Jim McDermott would have been my second choice! Whoo Hoo!

17. Congratulations tavalon!
I'd say you have an excellent Rep. now as well. I'm sure Jim and Lloyd work on a lot of legislation together. You should drop McDermott a line and let him know you are in his district now, and look forward to being represented by him. Tell him Lloyd did a fine job for you too.

Good luck out there in Seattle. And don't forget your Texas friend here at home.

16. He is mine rep. I've emailed him several times, always get a response
Love him and proud to have him as my representitive. Knowing what a marked man he was, I was thrilled to be able to vote for him in the primaries as well as the November 2 election. I have emailed him several times, and always get a response back within 48 hours. Compare this to my emails to Kay Hutchinson and John Cornyn. Neither has ever responded to a single email.

18. I agree with you LDS Jock
Lloyd still responds to me promptly whether by phone, e-mail or letter. I lost him as my Congressman, in the re-districting slaughter. I expect that even if I write to him next year that he will still respond to me. He's just that kind of man. He still has Austin & Travis in his heart, he's got a big heart.

I always get letters back from Kay. I've only gotten two e-mail responses from her. She will respond to letters or actions you take on Act For Change, or ACLU for example. We never agree on any issue mind you, but she does send out her standard repuke line form letters.

Cornyn (cromagman), on the other hand must have a bunch of illiterate staff. Or he just sees an Austin address, looks up how you vote and says "f*ck you, you're a Democrat". I really wonder if he doesn't respond to anybody, or really filters his responses i.e. only responds to people he knows vote repuke. He's got a lot of nerve not responding to his constituents. Heck I even get responses from Gov. Goodhair. Cornyn has already let D.C. go to his big thick skull.

19. You know, I did forget Hutchinson writing me until you posted
It was so long after I emailed and such a bland letter I wasn't sure what it was in response to. Until you mentioned the letter, I didn't even remember it. Now she has the gall to talk about wanting to be governor. Now there is an election to get fired up about. I don't care who her opponent is, I'll do whatever to help get him/her elected.
