Beer kegs would be registered under new bill
Don't our legislators have something better to do? I mean, I'm not exactly pro-binge drinking, or pro-underage drinking, but this just seems like symbolic paperwork crap that's not going to do anything.

A House bill filed this week would require Texans who buy kegs of beer to fill out a state registration swearing they are 21 years old and promising not to serve the beer to minors.

Beer retailers criticized the bill Wednesday, saying they would bear the burden of the proposed registration program and its bookkeeping.

The keg registration is one of three bills meant to reduce underage drinking filed by Rep. Rob Eissler, R-The Woodlands.

4. Incorrect
First of all the increased the deposit amount making harder to by a keg. Second it is now law that attached to the keg must be a receipt for that keg with the purchasers drivers license info. and that person is held resposable for all actions and drinkers of that keg. If that is removed the holder of the keg stands to pay upwards of what i believe is 1000 dollars or 3 months in jail.

5. law update
New York State's Keg Registration Program has been amended. - Posted November 18, 2004:

Retail sellers of beer are advised to review Bulletin 586-B, which provides updated information regarding the responsibilities of licensees engaged in the retail sale of kegs. Among other changes, the 30-day keg return period has been extended to 90 days. Revised forms required for compliance with the amended Keg Registration law are available for download on our Forms Download page.

Please Note: A keg is any container of four or more gallons, no matter what the shape.

3. This bill is unnecessary......
Wagener died from excessive drinking of hard alcohol, not beer. I don't see where registering beer kegs will have any real effect on underage drinking or alcohol-related deaths.

The TABC is already pretty unreasonable with it's beer-related labeling laws and it's prohibitive cost-of-doing-business in relation to permits and licensing. These laws would just add more cost, passed on to the consumer.

Responsible drinking behavior comes from education, not legislation.

What I CAN see is this conversation:

"Hey man, let's get a keg for our party."

"Naw, man, too much hassle to register it."

"Cool. Let's get a quarter bag instead".

"Cool."
