- Avoid US 50 at all costs -- at least from Winchester, VA, to Bridgeport, WV. It's an incredibly windy, though very scenic road. Save it for a long, slow trip.
- Going up into Pennsylvania and then crossing on I-70 is hours out of the way.
- I-64 to US 35 (between Charleston and Huntington) is not a bad choice, but US 35 in West Virginia is a mostly two-lane road. It's flat and fairly straight (it follows the Kanawha River), but you have the potential to get stuck behind the church crowd.
- I-64 to I-75 near Lexington, KY, is probably the best choice if you are uncomfortable with getting off the big highways. However...
- My personal choice would be:
- Take I-64 to exit 6 in West Virginia. Follow US 52 across the river to Ohio and continue west. Don't go a single mile above the speed limit -- the Ohio state troopers are evil!
- About 28 miles later, take the bridge at Franklin Furnace, and cross the river to Kentucky. At the light, go straight onto AA -- the double A highway. The AA is mostly four-lane, but not limited access. Watch for idiots at the intersections.
- The AA highway will take you about 110 miles to the I-275, the beltway around Cincinnati. From that point, you're on your own.
