Manufacturing doing well
Two new reports indicate that the manufacturing sector is seeing considerable strength this fall, even as some manufacturers are anticipating a dip in business conditions in the next three months.

A purchasing managers' index of the Milwaukee-area economy rose significantly in November, up 10 points from October, to 64. Local manufacturers are seeing strong demand for their products, production is active and the backlog is also up, the National Association of Purchasing Management-Milwaukee said.

Why did I post this? This should counter all the doom-and-gloomers who whine about Wisconsin taxes and "stiffling" environmental regulations, etc.

1. Manufacturing in Wisconsin
has two things going for it:

First, Wisconsin has a well-educated workforce. Remember, Alabama just lost a Toyota plant because Toyota had to make training manuals into "comic book format" for the workers to understand them. They moved the plant to Montreal.

Second, there is that much malaigned but very true "Wisconsin Nice" work ethic. We believe in doing a full day's work for a full day's pay. Employers get value for their labor dollar.

Thanks for posting that. I used to work in Economic Development in Wisconsin and had to fight the loud and obnoxious voices of WMAC constantly.

2. Well, let's see if that translates into slowing our descent into poverty
Milwaukee had the fastest poverty growth rate of any city in the US (prior to Katrina)last year, and was 7th on the poverty list.
