The bid to recall Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz has failed.
Madison Citizens for Responsible Government, which has ties to recall efforts in Milwaukee and other parts of the state based on fiscal issues, failed to gather 34,520 valid signatures from city residents by today's deadline, spokeswoman Heather Mees said Thursday.
The group registered its recall bid Nov. 9 and had 30 days to collect signatures. It was protesting Cieslewicz's support for a local minimum wage, a sweeping smoking ban and city ownership of Overture Center.
Milwaukee-based Citizens for Responsible Government Network provides resources to grass-roots efforts around the state if they are fiscally conservative and meet other criteria, spokesman Chris Kliesmet has said. He could not be reached for comment Thursday.
