Russ Feingold, D-Wis., Thursday during his listening session at the Peshtigo Municipal Building. (snip) "We've never used the Constitution for something like defining marriage," he said. "... I think it's a bad use of the Constitution. The Constitution should only be used for very limited purposes. I don't think this is one of them."(snip) That's where the original writers of the Constitution thought these types of decisions should be made, he contended. "There were issues about what kind of marriages should be allowed back then -- whether somebody should have more than one wife or whether there should be a prohibition of a black person marrying a white person. The country decided ... to leave it up to the states."
Feingold said he has seen a number of polls that indicate a majority of the people in Wisconsin who oppose gay marriage, want it banned at the state level. "I believe a very significant number of people do not like the idea of using the Constitution," he added.
Go, Russ, Go!
