Canada needs to protect its energy supplies: report
Canada needs to protect its energy supplies: report
Last updated Mar 7 2006 04:51 PM MST
CBC News

Three independent Canadian research institutes want the federal government to develop a new energy policy to better protect the needs of Canadians.

A report released Tuesday by the Parkland Institute along with the Polaris Institute and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives suggests Canada's future energy supply is in jeopardy because of how much oil and natural gas is sent to the United States.

"Our NAFTA partners both have policies to look after their own," Laxer said. "Who's looking after Canada's needs? Of the three NAFTA countries, who are the ones most likely to freeze in the dark?"

The report also pointed to post-Sept. 11 security concerns in the U.S. as one of the reasons that Americans are stockpiling resources.

2. That is true, but you kno NAFTA is there to prevent that.
And that our government is to sissy to do anything about it.

They spit in the eye of the public by engaging in a war without going through communes, but God forbid they actually do anything that's good for the people with the same kind of resolve. They are neo-cons after all, they have no interest in helping people.

Friggin tools.

4. It is time to serve notice to withdraw from NAFTA, imo
It only serves multinational corporations at the expense of the public. Foreign companies should be restricted to only being able to hold minority shares in any resource company, the majority shares being held by a totally Canadian owned company.

It is interesting that NAFTA was big in Ontario because of the automotive industry which is now closing down plants and outsourcing to other countries so the benefits of NAFTA, perceived or otherwise, have been greatly reduced.
