Turner slams Tory spending
The Harper government should break at least one of its campaign promises to Canadians because the overall cost of the party's platform is too expensive, an outspoken Conservative MP suggested yesterday.

"The total (cost of the platform) - $75 billion - is a huge amount," said Garth Turner, MP for the Toronto-area riding of Halton.

"I'm basically saying we should not proceed with some of this. I don't think we can afford it."

The Tories promised almost $45 billion in tax relief measures, including a 1% cut to the GST and $30 billion in new spending for everything from new highways to a substantially beefed up military over the five-year mandate of a government.
