Big city mayors want more federal bucks
EDMONTON/630 CHED - The mayors of Canada's largest cities are hoping to tap into the country's growing income and sales tax revenue to meet their expanding financial challenges.

A document, they released today, says property taxes and user fees no longer provide enough money to maintain their infrastructure and municipal services.

They want the federal and provincial governments to share revenues that grow with the economy as well as the establishment of a national transit program.

Mayor Stephen Mandel, reached in Montreal by 630 CHED News, says they plan to press their case tomorrow during a meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper after he addresses the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
