Peace-keeping a failure
EDMONTON - Canada's failure to stop the genocide in Rwanda in 1994 was a "Waterloo" for traditional peacekeeping, Liberal leadership candidate Michael Ignatieff said in Edmonton on Sunday.

Ignatieff's comments came a day after he took heavy fire from other candidates over his position on Canada's mission in Afghanistan during a debate in Winnipeg.

"Let's be honest with the history here. One of the places where peacekeeping met its Waterloo was on our watch, with Romeo Dallaire in Rwanda. And I vowed in 1994, and many good Liberals vowed in 1994, that we would never do that again.

"When people count on Canadians to protect them from warlords and butchers and thugs, I want a Canadian military that actually does that."

Just goes to show that if one doesn't buy the nice glossy magazine on entry one wouldn't be able to tell who is who!

1. Canada's failure? *Canada's* failure??
Ignatieff needs to be beaten about the head and shoulders with a cluebat.

Christ, Canada did more to try and prevent that genocide than those useless fuckers on the Security Council ever did.

He invokes Dallaire in his claim. Maybe he needs to read the man's book and then figure out who to blame.

2. This guy is more and more worrisome, imo
If he gets the Lib leadership, it will be hard to tell who is the con and who isn't. For him to blame Canada for Rwanda shows a couple of things: One, he doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground and says stupid things when on the defensive and; two, he is way too gung-ho for combat instead of peacekeeping.

All in all, he is an asshole, imo.

3. I thought he was
supposed to be smart or something?

"When people count on Canadians to protect them from warlords and butchers and thugs, I want a Canadian military that actually does that."

LOL...unless they are our warlords and butchers and thugs, of course like the US currently backing the 'warlords' in Somalia...

BUT then again 'protecting them' from warlords is peacekeeping or semantics depending on how many people you want to kill, the puppets you place in power (which are butchers and thugs) or the resources you want to steal...

Another rightwinger running for the Liberal party. The Election should be fun if Gnat gets the nod--two white guys aping for the US President and campaigning on how many 'towelheads' they can kill...

I'll be sitting out the next election, thank you very much.
