Visa delay escalates Canada's feud with Cuba

Canada denied a visitor's visa to a Cuban cabinet minister this week in what appears to be a diplomatic tit-for-tat response to Cuba cancelling a visit earlier this month by Peter Kent, Canada's Minister of State for the Americas.

Mark Entwistle, a former Canadian ambassador to Cuba who now runs a consulting firm focused on business in Cuba, said Canada's rhetoric and language on Cuba is at odds with the softer tone coming out of Washington.

Mr. Entwistle said relations between the two countries have been in a confused state since Mr. Harper's “old-fashioned, very ideological” Cuba-related comments at the Summit of the Americas.

“Not even the Americans use that kind of language,” said Mr. Entwistle, who said Canada's recent tone was being discussed by Cuban officials when he last visited the island earlier this month.
