Writer tries to track down fate of 21 missing voting machines

By Larisa Alexandrovna | RAW STORY Staff Writer

“Twenty-one touch-screen voting machines in Broward County were replaced because of technical problems, said Gisela Salas, the county’s deputy supervisor of elections. At least one of the machines had shown votes cast for the wrong candidates.”

This striking sentence in the fourteenth paragraph of a Nov. 4 AP wire story was merely the accidental starting point for RAW STORY research into voting irregularities in Broward County, Florida.

1. Speculations about role of the 21 machines
(The BlueLemur site seems to be getting hacked, or it has fragile software. The comment system is broken at the moment.)

If the 21 machines were, say, 2% of the total number of machines, and they consistently replaced Kerry votes by Bush votes, that would be enough to change the election result by about 4%. I'm making up approximations here, but you get the idea. Someone please fill in the correct numbers.

If these 21 machines were distributed throughout many precincts, rather than all in one place, that would reduce the visibility of this manipulation.

If these machines really were changing votes, and doing so in a way that would be detectable if examined, then they are most likely purging the evidence.

3. Is this a hardware failure or a programming success?
Will authorities investigate this as fraud or failure, and what steps will be taken to prevent this in the future?

For the answers to these dumb questions and more, don't tune into your News at 11.

2. Why haven't the defective machines been produced? Because
a lawsuit hasn't been filed! These floridians are hiding and possibly destroying evidence.

Where are the lawyers?

4. How interesting...
... because I live in Broward County, and this is the first I've heard about this. We have such wonderful media here! I've totally given up on the Sun-Sentinel except for the Sunday ads, and the Herald isn't much better. The TV stations pretty much ignore Broward unless there's something going on that might increase viewership.

I hope Larisa Alexandrovna isn't expecting much from Brenda Snipes. She was the Dem candidate for SOE in November, but she was in that position in the 1st place because Jebbie named her interim SOE after he removed Miriam Oliphant.

6. Let us not forget...
....that many of the voting machine seals were damaged or missing from polling places in New York. Those machines were impounded during the state senate race recount there.

I believe the number of missing/damaged seals was 21.
