ReDefeat Bush's January 6th Counter-Inaugural Event

Heard about it today on Mark Levine's show. Also, on their main page they ask for us to contact our senators and representatives--there are some clickable action items there as well.

{snip}

"Citizens from across the country will be coming to a vigil and rally starting at 10:00 AM in Upper Senate Park (adjacent to the U.S. Capitol) on January 6th to demonstrate our support for our leaders inside. We want an honest and transparent vote for president, but if we can't have that then we want to see Congress reject electoral votes sent from OH, FL, NC, IN and any other states in which massive fraud and vote suppression inflated George W. Bush's totals and diminished John Kerry's.

If you want our mobilization on January 6th to succeed, here are the top dozen things you can do:"

1. Reality Check Time. It won't work. Here is why.
There is a fantasy going around that if we can get a representative and a senator to object to the electoral delegates then that will somehow stop Bush. Here is a site that explains the law:

http://www.house.gov/cha/electoralcollege/electoralcollege.html

So once the objections are made, the two houses immediately separate and debate for two hours only. No time extensions. No filibuster. After two hours, each house will vote on the challenge. Majority rules vote wins. It will be done by the NEW congress. Since the Republicans have a majority in both houses, they will win. The challenge will be rejected. Bush has the power to easily win that round.

All that will have been accomplished will be a delay of a few hours in the EC counting, or maybe even a delay of a couple of days if every single red state is challenged. And the senator that joins in bringing the challenge will be sure to have made the rest of the senate, even the Democrats, mad at him for making then use up time on theatrical grandstanding that accomplishes nothing. They will pay him/her back with greatly reduced cooperation, even from the other Democrats. They all know that too. I will be very surprised if you can manage to get even a single senator on board.

2. Why don't you just pooh-pooh EVERYONE who is doing this?
Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 05:49 PM by Carolab
Because there are LOTS of them....and here is why:

What's All This Then?
We're urging everyone to ask their Senators and Reps to declare their intent
NOW to object to presidential electors on Jan 6th by endorsing the declaration.

It puts states on notice that there may be a consequence to their lack of action.
Included is a demand that states take affirmative action to demonstrate that any
problems in their state have been remedied or are of negligible effect.

This puts the burden of proof back where it belongs. State officials don't simply
owe us a vote count that we can't prove was criminally generated. They owe us a
result we have confidence in. They have failed in several states to do this.

What are we accomplishing? It sounds futile. We should moveon and fight
other battles. Shouldn't we?
It's never wrong to refuse to back down on principle. To go the distance. To take
it to the mat. To hold the finish. To...to...to... oh, phplhth !!!

On a more practical level, we are creating a real consequence for the situation.
No one among the DC/Media Aristocracy wants to see such a public (in fact,
historic) confirmation that while our kids are dying for democracy in far off lands,
we can't succeed in providing a reasonable level of it here at home.

There is also the implied threat to states that refuse to provide electoral equality.
They would start thinking "hey, something might actually happen next time if we
don't clean up our act." Everyone knows they don't put up a traffic light until after
someone killed.

Getting a Senator to "sign on" now would also dial up the media attention and
therefore public awareness.

5. The title of your thread is: Redefeat Bush
Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 06:31 PM by Silverhair
The paragraph that you include makes it sound like you think this action will somehow stop him from taking office. It was that belief that I addressed. Now you are changing it to an objective of making the elections more transparent. That is a different objective.

So let's wait and see if you get any senators to climg aboard the EC challenge.

3. The Democratic Party should either throw the gaunlet on these
past elections or change their name to the Republican Lite Party. Speaking strictly for myself, fair and transparent elections are and will be the only items on my agenda until I'm certain the issues here have been properly dealt with. If that can be arranged working with the Democratic Party, fine, but if it takes building a new party, then even better.
