Dear George Washington, please don't fight the British
George,

I know that you have this crazy notion that the colonies should break from England. I know that you believe that if you stand up, you can make things better for the colonists.

Well, that is just CRAZY talk! Do you hear me?? It's crazy.

Look, I love the colonies as much as you do and I really wish that the King was nicer to us but it's foolish to go against the King.

Okay, picture this: what if you stand up and the colonies lose? What then, George? Your career is over. You and the rest of your little band of dissidents will be imprisoned or hung. If you aren't jailed or killed, you will have no career. No one will listen to you because you stood on the losing side.

Just give it up, George. You are making the colonies the laughing stock of the Empire! Think about the future. It will get better only if you trust the King.

I am begging you to reconsider this foolish effort.

Sincerely,

Sir W. S.

46. Funny thing is....
it was the LIBERALS (John Adams) who wanted independence. The conservatives were more concerned about their money and their loyalty to the king. They didn't want to risk losing it all.

57. Love the thread! Just a quick note for historical accuracy -
Edited on Wed Jan-05-05 05:35 PM by Pooka Fey
A poorly clothed and badly equipped Army, i.e. the Americans, would NEVER have been able to defeat the British Empire. Basically, without the French Army and Navy, we would have been slaughtered.

The decisive victory at Yorktown in 1781 which forced the British surrender was a Naval victory - America didn't even have a Navy - it was the French who whooped ass, and basically won the American revolution for us.

Not to cast aspersions on the bravery and courage of the Americans - they were mostly amazingly courageous citizen soldiers, not professionals like the Europeans. I wish more Americans realized what an incredible human being George Washington was. Just giving credit where it's due in this * sponsered French-bashing 21st century America we live in.

16. The Danger of Challenging the British without Ironclad Proof We'll Win:
We will be marginalized, and treated like an inferior entity.

We will lose credibility, for trying and failing.

It would be much better to work within the system, and plead our case more courteously to the King.

And finally, the analysis of ye actuaries, while presenting prodigious volumes of numerical suggestions, does not constitute ABSOLUTE PROOF demanded by good peoples before such a radical venture.

Yours most sincerely,

J. Shrubbington Wimphole

However, in attempting to clarify my memory I found a nice page of quotes, all of which are along those lines.

62. Oh, and George? If you must go through with this...
Make certain to announce each and every one of your plans publically before you put them into action, okay? That helps take the British by surprise because it confuses them when they know exactly what we're going to do before we start. Tell them where our ammunition, food, and other supplies are stored, too. They'll be safer that way. They won't be blockaded, pilfered, or contaminated. No, not at all.

Remember, announce your plans and do it often so we can all feel better. I know I'll rest easier knowing what will happen every moment of every day and will get warm fuzzies hearing your feelings about every blink or other movement you make during each day.

Thanks, George! :hi:

Please don't arm the populace. They're just common people...they have no reason to own weapons. The only people who should have those are the military...they'll protect each and every one of the common folk.

65. I did forget to mention that to George
Don't create militias out of the armed civilians. It's good to be outnumbered by an occupying army. And should we win our independence, encourage those civilians to believe that they are still in a militia and should have the right to possess weapons useful only to the military. Let them have any number of any kind of guns they desire just like our new, National army troops, even when hunting for food is no longer necessary. We'll be ever so much safer then.
