Salt Lake Tribune: Balloting backups are sought
High-tech: A Utah County lawmaker says he doesn't want votes getting gobbled in cyberspace

By Thomas Burr
The Salt Lake Tribune

Rep. John Dougall wants to make sure your vote isn't lost.

With the state looking for new voting equipment - possibly electronic, touch-screen machines - the Highland Republican has proposed legislation that would require the new devices have some type of "unalterable, auditable record" of votes cast.

-snip-

"The key thing I'm trying to do is protect the integrity from when that vote is cast to when it's counted," said Dougall, who is sponsoring House Bill 211. "The key thing is avoiding putting too much power behind closed doors."

-snip-

Clarity Sanderson, the Internet outreach coordinator for the Utah Democratic Progressive Caucus, said the bill has good intentions. "However, it's missing some key factors to make it as transparent as need be."

Do I see some bi-partisan consensus here?

1. We really need to be working REALLY HARD at the County and State

levels of government. It would be nice if the lawmakers in Washington weren't so isolated from the real news (internet), but let's face it: most of them HAVE NO CLUE.

Our success is going to come at the local and state levels. We need to start hammering our State legislatures to demand hand counts and paper ballots, and leave the DRE's with the secret, hackable computer codes out of the equation.

O8) Let us pray that Utah really does get it right! O8)

And let's get behind California Sec. of State Kevin Shelley, who is being brought down by the Diebold mafia, since he sent them packing in California.

We need some MAJOR activism on the California newspapers, to tell them WHY Shelley may have been set up for this latest smear.

2. I think you may be right about County and State.
But I'm becoming concerned that Shelly, indeed, screwed up.

5. The Wired article is an AP story. They are demonstrably untruthful.
Let's stay tuned, but stay optimistic... and keep the research going.
