7. It's safe to say that Americans have their eyes closed.
I may be overly optimistic, but I think we have just hit our first obstacle to Democracy. Europeans have a healthy dose of skepticism. Not to mention common sense.

Americans have been told that it can all be done for them. And better.

A car will take you where you want to go, if you keep your eyes on the road.

I haven't paid enough attention to the election issues just because they seem so academic. I mean, if you want an accurate vote, you don't go with partisan voting.

Thanks for posting those photos. I like seeing people who have a system that works. Maybe it'll catch on.

8. I'm blown away. This is superb. Every American should see it.
And I mean that. This sequence of pictures says it all. We can vote by paper, it can be efficient, it is safe when observed and with easy to understand security.

There is no problem.

SEND THIS LINK TO DNC. Demand Action!!! No more bull shit from them, anymore!

http://www.democrats.org/page/s/contact

We are TOTALY SCREWED in 2006 unless DNC and the party wake up to election fraud. We NEED paper ballots now. Look, it's easy, the British do it. These pictures outline it. Canada does it too.

We were screwed, we are screwed, we will be screwed without strong advocacy from the top. I'm a field working-my-behind-off Democrat. Please

Just go here and look!

33. They're not perfect but the "vote counting" is the point here.
We have "vote fraud" here but that comes in small doses and is pretty well addressed. The problem is in the making and counting of votes on machines provided by Republican biased vendors who, by contract, disallow anyone but the vendors from seeing what goes on inside the machines. The first time Diebold had to submit "source code" for escrow in NC, they chose not to sell in the state (don't blame them, explaining 10,000 lines of code in their touch screen might be a little difficult).

The issues raised in these cases were those of stealing ballots and misrepresentation, not counting problems. This is not surprising given the underhanded way Labour conducts itself as a party. The 100 or so back bench rebels are really wimps. Robin Cook was a brave and patriotic man. He stood tall. The rest are trifles.

I also recall problems with the mail in vote process in GB. Was that part of this case.

Very good points but I'll take your counting, by hand, over our mess any day. Send us your tellers!

:hi: and Welcome to DU!!!

Isn't it nice when people actually observe the counting with their own eyes?

Who's watching our counts? Nobody! Not even the person running the computer can see how the votes are tallied.

Night and day.

13. When five voted for millions (because of the machine counts)
When five voted for millions

One of the darkest hours in the history of the U.S. Supreme Court was Dec. 12, 2000, at 10 p.m., when the five-member conservative majority handed the presidency to George W. Bush over his rival Al Gore.

Despite Florida's 61,000 statewide undervotes - possible legal votes that had not been counted by the machines - the high court claimed it was acting in the name of fairness to the state's voters when it overturned a decision by the Florida Supreme Court and stopped the recount

btw wasn't Karl Rove present at the 'spontaneous demonstration' in Florida? IIRC there was a really piggy looking guy pushing in through the door that was his spitting image in Greg Palast's report for the BBC's Newsnight programme.

How hard is this for our "leaders" to understand? The only reason to let computers count is so you can steal the election. It's so freakin' simple.

18. Christmas Dinner Discussion
At Christmas Dinner with friends, most of the conversation was political, much of it on how when can ever again get an honest count in this country. Many agreed that voting by hand, with lots of supervised counting might be best ... even the Iraqi blue thumb would be better than the "no trail, no tell" system that cheated us out of our truly elected president during the past two elections. ANYTHING would be better than Diebold and its ilk.

23. People counting votes. And other people watching them. Wow!
Diebold, ES&S, corrupt election officials, and everybody involved have really surrounded the matter with confusion--and with an alphabet soup of obscurantist, gibberish language, and whole new sets of rules and acronyms (EAC, HAVA). But verification and transparency are really very simple. And if they had wanted to hold a transparent, verifiable election, they would have.

Corporate privatization run absolutely rampant. Well, maybe it will just become so obvious and so absurd, they will be laughed out the election business. Secret decoder ring elections. Really. Are we the laughingstock of the world yet?

-----

(Secret Decoder Rings! Ye-e-e-es! We pass them out to voters. The ring de-codes the secret gobble-de-gook language of how they 'disappear' your vote, and insures that your vote is counted by baffling the "mystery box." Am I on to something here?)

25. Oh, WOW...plain, ordinary, humble common sense in action...
You want it counted? Count it. No machines, just count it.

Does anyone remember that the ONLY reason behind the push for e-voting originally was SPEED? Apparently, getting our votes tallied in the wee hours of the morning after the vote was just not good enough. With the TV networks trying to "call" the outcome of the election before all the votes were in, and each trying to be first, this put a (perceived) premium on speed. In fact, there was never any requirement for speed. It was only the jockeying for commercial dominance among the networks that pushed things in that direction. Once the idea got started, then Rove's Ratfuckers realized it was wide open for exploitation, and started pushing for it hard. But it all got started with that good old American "I don't want to wait, I want it NOW" attitude. See what impatience has gotten us!
