Like many Americans, I spent the evening of the 2004 election watching the returns on television and wondering how the exit polls, which predicted an overwhelming victory for John Kerry, had gotten it so wrong. By midnight, the official tallies showed a decisive lead for George Bush -- and the next day, lacking enough legal evidence to contest the results, Kerry conceded. Republicans derided anyone who expressed doubts about Bush's victory as nut cases in ''tinfoil hats,'' while the national media, with few exceptions, did little to question the validity of the election. The Washington Post immediately dismissed allegations of fraud as ''conspiracy theories,''(1) and The New York Times declared that ''there is no evidence of vote theft or errors on a large scale.''(2)

But despite the media blackout, indications continued to emerge that something deeply troubling had taken place in 2004. Nearly half of the 6 million American voters living abroad(3) never received their ballots -- or received them too late to vote(4) -- after the Pentagon unaccountably shut down a state-of-the-art Web site used to file overseas registrations.(5) A consulting firm called Sproul & Associates, which was hired by the Republican National Committee to register voters in six battleground states,(6) was discovered shredding Democratic registrations.(7) In New Mexico, which was decided by 5,988 votes,(8) malfunctioning machines mysteriously failed to properly register a presidential vote on more than 20,000 ballots.(9) Nationwide, according to the federal commission charged with implementing election reforms, as many as 1 million ballots were spoiled by faulty voting equipment -- roughly one for every 100 cast.(10)

The reports were especially disturbing in Ohio, the critical battleground state that clinched Bush's victory in the Electoral College. Officials there purged tens of thousands of eligible voters from the rolls, neglected to process registration cards generated by Democratic voter drives, shortchanged Democratic precincts when they allocated voting machines and illegally derailed a recount that could have given Kerry the presidency. A precinct in an evangelical church in Miami County recorded an impossibly high turnout of ninety-eight percent, while a polling place in inner-city Cleveland recorded an equally impossible turnout of only seven percent. In Warren County, GOP election officials even invented a nonexistent terrorist threat to bar the media from monitoring the official vote count.(11)

Worse Than 2000: Tuesday's Electoral Disaster

Everyone remembers Florida's 2000 election debacle, and all of the new terms it introduced to our political lexicon: Hanging chads, dimpled chads, pregnant chads, overvotes, undervotes, Sore Losermans, Jews for Buchanan and so forth. It took several weeks, battalions of lawyers and a questionable decision from the U.S. Supreme Court to show the nation and the world how messy democracy can be. By any standard, what happened in Florida during the 2000 Presidential election was a disaster.

What happened during the Presidential election of 2004, in Florida, in Ohio, and in a number of other states as well, was worse.

Some of the problems with this past Tuesday's election will sound all too familiar. Despite having four years to look into and deal with the problems that cropped up in Florida in 2000, the 'spoiled vote' chad issue reared its ugly head again. Investigative journalist Greg Palast, the man almost singularly responsible for exposing the more egregious examples of illegitimate deletions of voters from the rolls, described the continued problems in an article published just before the election, and again in an article published just after the election.

A poster named 'TruthIsAll' on the DemocraticUnderground.com forums laid out the questionable results of Tuesday's election in succinct fashion: "To believe that Bush won the election, you must also believe: That the exit polls were wrong; that Zogby's 5pm election day calls for Kerry winning Ohio and Florida were wrong (he was exactly right in his 2000 final poll); that Harris' last-minute polling for Kerry was wrong (he was exactly right in his 2000 final poll); that incumbent rule #1 - undecideds break for the challenger - was wrong; That the 50% rule - an incumbent doesn't do better than his final polling - was wrong; That the approval rating rule - an incumbent with less than 50% approval will most likely lose the election - was wrong; that it was just a coincidence that the exit polls were correct where there was a paper trail and incorrect (+5% for Bush) where there was no paper trail; that the surge in new young voters had no positive effect for Kerry; that Kerry did worse than Gore against an opponent who lost the support of scores of Republican newspapers who were for Bush in 2000; that voting machines made by Republicans with no paper trail and with no software publication, which have been proven by thousands of computer scientists to be vulnerable in scores of ways, were not tampered with in this election."

Full 51 State Early Exit Poll Data Released For the First Time

Scoop.co.nz is delighted to be able today to publish a full set of 4pm exit poll data for the first time on the Internet since the US election. The data emerged this evening NZT in a post on the Democratic Underground website under the forum name TruthIsAll.

The new data confirms what was already widely known about the swing in favour of George Bush, but amplifies the extent of that swing.

In the data which is shown below in tabulated form, and above in graph form, we can see that 42 of the 51 states in the union swung towards George Bush while only nine swung towards Kerry.

There has to date been no official explanation for the discrepancy.

Ordinarily in the absence of an obvious mistabulation error, roughly the same number of states should have swung towards each candidate.

Moreover many of the states that swung against Democratic Party hopeful John Kerry swung to an extent that is well beyond the margin of error in exit polls. Exit polls by their nature - they ask voters how they actually voted rather than about their intentions - are typically considered highly accurate.

Cobb Calls On Congress to Reject Tainted Electoral College Votes

WASHINGTON -- December 30 -- A day after the conclusion of the flawed recount of Ohio's presidential vote, Green Party presidential candidate David Cobb called on Congress to challenge the legitimacy of Ohio's Electoral College delegation.

"The recount of Ohio's presidential vote was conducted in clear violation of both the spirit and the letter of the law. We can have no faith in the results when both the initial election and the recount were conducted in a haphazard and clearly illegitimate manner. Ohio's presidential electors are tainted by unresolved allegations of voter suppression and the lack of a meaningful recount. Congress must reject and challenge their votes," said Cobb.

One of the most significant problems with the recount was that few of Ohio's 88 counties randomly selected sample precincts for the recount as required by Ohio law.

"The lack of random sampling calls into question the legitimacy of the recount. A few counties did the recount properly and selected the precincts at random. The vast majority of them, however, chose the precincts in advance without the official observers witnessing or participating in the selection. That's like showing up at a poker game with strangers and finding that you've already been dealt your hand," said Blair Bobier, Cobb-LaMarche Media Director.

COLUMBUS - Partisan activists contesting the presidential election results in Ohio said the state's highest court appears willing to "allow the clock to run out" so that the Electoral College results become official on Jan. 6.

Cliff Arnebeck, an attorney who filed the election contest on behalf of a coalition of activists led by the Rev. Jesse Jackson, said Secretary of State Ken Blackwell has chosen to not appear at a deposition to answer questions under oath about the Nov. 2 election.

"If George Bush indeed won this election, there would be no one with a greater interest in proving that to be the case," Mr. Arnebeck said at a news conference yesterday. "They want the clock to run out. They want to win by default."

The lawsuit alleges that votes were taken away from Democrat John Kerry's column and added to Mr. Bush's.

Voters' Bill of Rights

1. Count every vote

The right to vote includes the right to have our votes properly counted.

We must ensure that every citizen's vote will be counted. This includes a guarantee of open and transparent elections with verified voting, paper trails, and access to the source codes for, and random audits of, electronic voting machines. It also includes a guarantee that we the people, through our government, will control our voting machines — not private companies.
2. Make voting easier

We should enact Election Day registration here in Massachusetts, removing the barrier of registration prior to Election Day. Six states have Election Day registration. They have a higher voter turnout in their elections and have no evidence of voter fraud. We should be encouraging greater participation in the political process, starting with Election Day registration.

We should also ensure absentee voting for all, allow for early voting, and remove other barriers that make it difficult for people to vote.
3. End the big money dominance of our electoral process

In a democracy, public elections should be publicly financed. In Maine and Arizona, publicly financed elections have enabled people to run for office who would never have dreamed of running under a system dominated by big money interests. We, as voters, need to own our elections, rather than allow the process to be controlled by the wealthy few.

We also need to enact mandatory limits on campaign spending. In 1976, the Supreme Court wrongly struck down mandatory campaign spending limits for congressional elections. A federal appeals court in New York has recently revisited that decision and ruled that campaign spending limits in Vermont can be constitutional. That case is now pending before the U.S. Supreme Court. Massachusetts should help lead the way with campaign spending limits for our elections.
4. Expand voter choice

Instant run-off voting: Voters should be able to rank their choices of candidates, ensuring majority support for those elected and allowing greater voter choice and wider voter participation.

Cross Endorsement Voting (Fusion voting): Voters should be able to cast their ballots for major party candidates on a minor party's ballot line, placing power in the hands of the people and broadening public debate on the issues of the day.

Proportional Representation: Voters should be allowed their fair share of representation, ensuring that majority rule does not prevent minority voices from being heard.
5. Ensure access for new citizens and language minorities

The right to vote does not speak one specific language. It is universal. No one should be denied the right to vote because of a language barrier.
6. Level the playing field for challengers

Redistricting reform — Incumbent legislators should not have the power to draw their own district lines. We must transfer this power to independent non-partisan commissions and create fair standards for redistricting, thereby promoting competition in our electoral process and improving representation for the people.
7. Ensure non-partisan election administration

The Secretary of the Commonwealth must be a Secretary for all of us, regardless of party affiliation. The Secretary should not be allowed to serve as a co-chair of campaigns of candidates. To ensure the people's trust in the integrity of our elections, the Secretary must conduct the administration of elections in a non-partisan manner.
8. Make government more accessible to all of us

Democracy is not just about our participation on Election Day. We need to participate every day and our government needs to be accessible to us every day. This means a government that is open and transparent, that encourages people to make their voices heard, and that enlists citizen participation in addressing the major issues of our time.
9. Re-authorize the Voting Rights Act of 1965

We must continue the fight to protect the right to vote and to end voting disenfranchisement schemes. The Secretary of the Commonwealth must fight for congressional re-authorization of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
10. Amend the US Constitution to ensure an affirmative right to vote

One hundred and eight democratic nations in the world have explicit language guaranteeing the right to vote in their constitutions, and the United States — along with only ten other such nations — does not. As a result, the way we administer elections in this country changes from state to state, from county to county, from locality to locality. The Secretary of the Commonwealth must fight for a constitutional amendment that affirmatively guarantees the right to vote in the US Constitution.

We have found numerous serious election irregularities in the Ohio presidential election…Cumulatively, these irregularities, which affected hundreds of thousands of voters…raise grave doubts about whiter it can e said that the Ohio electors…were chosen in a manner conforming to Ohio law, let alone Federal requirements and constitutional standards.

PRE ELECTION

I …the following actions by Mr. Blackwell (Ohio Republican Secretary of State), the Republican Party, and elections officials disenfranchised HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of Ohio citizens, predominantly Minority and Democratic voters.
A. …misallocation of voting machines led to unprecedented long lines that disenfranchised scores, if not hundreds of thousands, of predominantly Minority and Democratic Voters.
B. Mr. Blackwell’s decision to restrict provisional ballots resulted in the disenfranchisement of tens, if not hundreds of thousands of voters, predominantly Minority and Democratic voters.
C. Mr. Blackwell’s widely reviled decision to reject voter registration applications…may have resulted in thousands of new voters not being registered in timer for the 2004 election.
D. “caging: tactics” (voter intimidation through threatening letters, etc.) targeted 35,000 predominantly minority voters for intimidation, had a negative impact on voter turnout.
E. The Ohio Republican Party’s decision to utilize thousands of partisan challengers contradicted concentrated in minority and Democratic areas probably disenfranchised tens of thousands of legal voters…
F. Mr. Blackwell’s decision to prevent voters who requested absentee ballots, but did not receive them on a timely basis, from being able to receive provisional ballots probably disenfranchised thousands, if not tens of thousands of voters, particularly seniors.

II. On Election Day

A. …widespread instances of intimidation and misinformation in violation of the Voting Rights Act, the Civil Rights Act of 1968, the Equal Protection Due Process and Ohio right to vote.
B. …improper purging and other registration errors by election officials that probably disenfranchised tens of thousands of voters statewide.
C. There were 93,000 spoiled ballots where no vote was cast for president, the vast majority of which (were not inspected at the time of his report).
D. …numerous significant unexplained irregularities.
1. Mahonig county…at least twenty-five electronic machines transferred an unknown number of Kerry votes to the Bush column;
2. Warren County locked out public observers from vote counting citing a FBI warning about terrorist threat…(no FBI threat issues);
3. Perry County...significantly more votes than voters in some precincts…
4. Butler County, down ballot…Democratic Supreme Court candidate (out polls) Kerry;

III. …post election period…numerous irregularities in tallying provisional ballots and conducting and completing the recount that disenfranchised thousands of voters and called the entire recount procedure into question:
A. …failure to articulate clear and consistent standards for counting of provisional ballots.
B…failure to issue specific standards for the recount contributed to a lack of uniformity in violating of both the Due Process clause and the Equal Protection clause…including:
1. Counties that did not randomly select precinct samples;
2. Counties which did not conduct a full hand count after the 3% hand and machine count did not match;
3. Counties which allowed irregular marking of ballots and failed to secure and store allots and machinery; and
4. Counties which prevented witnesses for candidates from observing various aspects of the recount.
C. The voting computer company Triad has essentially admitted that it engaged in a course of behavior during the recount in numerous counties to provide “cheat sheets” to those counting the ballot. …how many votes they should find for each candidate, and how many over and under-votes they should calculate to match the machine count. In that way, they could avoid doing a full county-wide recount mandated by law

Hearings on Ohio voting put 2004 election in doubt

Highly-charged, jam-packed hearings held here in Columbus have cast serious doubt on the true outcome of the presidential election.

On Saturday, November 13, the Ohio Election Protection Coalition’s public hearings in Columbus solicited extensive sworn first-person testimony from 32 of Ohio voters, precinct judges, poll workers, legal observers, party challengers. An additional 66 people provided written affidavits of election irregularities. The unavoidable conclusion is that this year's election in Ohio was deeply flawed, that thousands of Ohioans were denied their right to vote, and that the ultimate vote count is very much in doubt.

Most importantly, the testimony has revealed a widespread and concerted effort on the part of Republican Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell to deny primarily African-American and young voters the right to cast their ballots within a reasonable time. By depriving precincts of adequate numbers of functioning voting machines, Blackwell created waits of three to eleven hours, driving tens of thousands of likely Democratic voters away from the polls and very likely affecting the outcome of the Ohio vote count, which in turn decided the national election.

On November 17, Blackwell wrote an op-ed piece for Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Washington Times, stating: “Every eligible voter who wanted to vote had the opportunity to vote. There was no widespread fraud, and there was no disenfranchisement. A half-million more Ohioans voted than ever before with fewer errors than four years ago, a sure sign on success by any measure,” Blackwell wrote. Moon's extreme right wing Unification Church has long-standing ties to the Bush Family and the Central Intelligence Agency.

A Semi-Comprehensive Quizzing of Manjoo's Rebuttal of RFK Jr.

This will be my first ever diary on Daily Kos, but I don't expect anyone to go easy on me.

This afternoon I read with great interest Farhad Manjoo's rebuttal in Salon of Robert Kennedy Jr.'s article in Rolling Stone. I would ask you to believe me when I state that although I have been of the opinion since Nov 2 2004 that it was very likely that the election was fraudulent, I approach articles such as Mr. Manjoo's with a strange hope that this time I can have it explained to me in a way that allows me to finally get a good night's sleep, secure in the knowledge that nothing overtly untoward was going on, that the process of democracy in the United States is still hobbling along, flawed but basically intact. Despite my huge admiration for RFK Jr., and my lasting dream that he will one day soon be the most effective and honorable head of the EPA that this nation has ever had, deep inside I harbored a hope that he was wrong on this, and that Salon and Mr. Manjoo were going to show me the way.

Sorry to say, I'm just not there yet.

A Corrupted Election
Despite what you may have heard, the exit polls were right

Recall the Election Day exit polls that suggested John Kerry had won a convincing victory? The media readily dismissed those polls and little has been heard about them since.

Many Americans, however, were suspicious. Although President Bush prevailed by 3 million votes in the official, tallied vote count, exit polls had projected a margin of victory of 5 million votes for Kerry. This unexplained 8 million vote discrepancy between the election night exit polls and the official count should raise a Chinese May Day of red flags.

The U.S. voting system is more vulnerable to manipulation than most Americans realize. Technologies such as electronic voting machines provide no confirmation that votes are counted as cast, and highly partisan election officials have the power to suppress votes and otherwise distort the count.

Exit polls are highly accurate. They remove most of the sources of potential polling error by identifying actual voters and asking them immediately afterward who they had voted for.

At 5:00 p.m. Eastern time on Election Day, I checked the sportsbook odds in Las Vegas and via the offshore bookmakers to see the odds as of that moment on the Presidential election. John Kerry was a two-to-one favorite. You can look it up.

People who have lived in the sports world as I have, bettors in particular, have a feel for what I am about to say about this: these people are extremely scientific in their assessments. These people understand which information to trust and which indicators to consult in determining where to place a dividing line to influence bets, and they are not in the business of being completely wrong. Oddsmakers consulted exit polling and knew what it meant and acknowledged in their oddsmaking at that moment that John Kerry was winning the election.

And he most certainly was, at least if the votes had been fairly and legally counted. What happened instead was the biggest crime in the history of the nation, and the collective media silence which has followed is the greatest fourth-estate failure ever on our soil.

So far in this post-election trip through Alice’s looking glass we’ve had:

—a University of Pennsylvania professor defending the accuracy of exit polling in order damn the accuracy of vote counting;

—a joint CalTech/MIT study defending the accuracy of exit polling in order to confirm the accuracy of vote counting;

—a series of lesser academic works assailing the validity of the Penn and CalTech/MIT assessments;

—and now, a UC Berkeley Research Team report that concludes President Bush may have received up to 260,000 more votes in fifteen Florida counties than he should have, all courtesy the one-armed bandits better known as touch-screen voting systems.

How To Take Back A Stolen Election

"Never again!" says the slogan in an email I received from an activist friend. "Never again will we allow a stolen election in the USA!" But how are we going to stop it?

The major American political parties have an answer - it's already working for them in the Ukraine - but it's very much a sword that can cut two ways.

Interestingly, it was first used in the US.

On December 4, 2000, in time to change the outcome of the Electoral College vote, Greg Palast published an article in Salon.com, made into a BBC television documentary shortly thereafter, that laid out solid evidence of massive electoral fraud in Florida, perpetrated against the majority-Democratic-voting African American community by Katherine Harris and Jeb Bush. Without this fraud, Gore would have easily carried the state.

Even more glaring, a consortium of news organizations found and reported on the front page of The New York Times (and other papers) on 12 September 2001, that in Florida "...a statewide recount -- could have produced enough votes to tilt the election his way, no matter what standard was chosen to judge voter intent." (The Times apparently chose to bury this fact - that Gore actually won the 2000 election - in the 15th paragraph and behind a misleading headline because the nation had been attacked on 9/11 the day before.)

Not only was the election of 2000 stolen by the Bush brothers, but it was proven by the later statewide recount that - even after Jeb's knocking thousands of African Americans off the rolls - Gore still would have won Florida had all the votes been counted.

Ohio's governor race spotlights role of Arlington Group

In June 2003, a group of evangelical Christian leaders met in Arlington, Virginia, to map strategy for a clash they viewed as the political equivalent of Gettysburg, the most significant battle ever fought on American soil.

The group members—veterans of the culture wars and the birth of the religious right that followed the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 ruling legalizing abortion—coalesced around an issue that they felt crystallized the depths of depravity to which America had sunk: same-sex marriage.

For Ohio secretary of state Ken Blackwell, the timing is perfect.

Thought to have little chance of winning the Republican primary for governor, Blackwell seized the moment and led a successful, high-profile campaign to outlaw gay marriage in Ohio in 2004. In the process, he helped hand President Bush a second term.

Largely as a result of that effort, Blackwell now is the Republican nominee for Ohio governor, the first black man nominated for that post. He will oppose the Democratic nominee, Representative Ted Strickland. Blackwell also is a member of the Arlington Group, a by-invitation-only organization whose roughly 60 members have direct access to the White House.

The Arlington Group's other cofounder besides Wildmon is Paul Weyrich, chairman of the Free Congress Foundation, a conservative think tank in Washington. The Arlington Group has no formal business structure; its meetings are private and members are prohibited from releasing a membership list, although many have talked openly about their membership.

Among other Arlington Group members identified by the Cleveland Plain Dealer are Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council in Washington; Bishop Harry Jackson, chairman, High Impact Leadership Coalition, College Park, Maryland; and Rick Scarborough, president, Vision America, Lufkin, Texas, who hosted a controversial "War on Christians" conference in Washington this year.

Although their influence is hard to measure, blogs already are as much a fixture of the modern political campaign as yard signs.

Bloggers are spreading news and gossip, raising money and rallying support for candidates and causes -- tending the "netroots," as they call it.

At times, bloggers' passion for politics -- and their eagerness to be the first to break news -- lead to embarrassing mistakes.

The major campaigns monitor the leading blogs and sometimes respond directly to them. Some have hired their own bloggers to help influence the online debate.

Because of Ohio's status as a swing state, its politics are also followed closely by national blogs such as dailykos.com and talkingpointsmemo.com, which have begun citing Ohio bloggers on their sites.

Carlo LoParo, a spokesman for Blackwell, whose Web site features the most caustic official blog, said cyberpundits on both sides of the aisle are extremely important because they provide a window to rival campaigns that never existed before.

Voting-machine purchase issue puts county in bind

Pima County could be in violation of federal law — and on the hook for $2 million — if the Board of Supervisors doesn't agree to buy touch-screen voting machines from Diebold Elections Systems.

But the county could end up on the wrong side of a lawsuit filed by election activists if it does buy the machines.

The supervisors will be facing this damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't dilemma for a third time Tuesday on what could be their last chance to make a decision in time for the fall elections.

The board twice has postponed a decision on the voting machines in response to critics who say the devices can be tampered with and don't provide an adequate paper trail in case a recount is needed. In a prepared statement, Arizona Secretary of State Jan Brewer blasted the delay, calling it "unconscionable."

I don't mind saying I'm one of those left-wing wackos who gives a rip about the veracity of our electoral process. Yep. I'm just that insane. I'm clearly a moonbat! I'm simultaneously from the moon and bat-shaped.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s latest investigative report in Rolling Stone, along with Mark Crispin Miller's Fooled Again have jointly renewed a process of legitimizing skepticism over the presidential election results in 2000, 2002, and 2004. Thankfully.

What's so horribly wrong with examining the results of an election and finding evidence of fraud -- electronic manipulation or other forms of chicanery? And how does that qualify anyone as loony, be they Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Senator Boxer, Congressman Conyers, Randi Rhodes, Thom Hartmann, or Mark Crispin Miller? Hell, it's not like they're expecting you to believe that Hillary Clinton had Vince Foster whacked, or that American G.I.s executed Nazi SS soldiers at Malmedy in 1944 (the exact opposite happened, O'Reilly).

We're just saying, Hey! Our basic democratic right to vote is being undermined by corporate and political criminals, and here's how.

When the 2000 election was in dispute, this concern was voiced by everyone. The Bush campaign carried their obviously moonbat-ish conspiracy theories all the way to the Supreme Court in 2000 and had scores of lawyers and operatives on the ground in 2004 declaring Democratic fraud. Moonbats.

Don't worry. I'm not going to spend inches here enumerating the specifics of what happened. Instead, read Kennedy's investigative report here. Seriously. Read it and admit to yourself: if the evidence summarized by Kennedy had come from an election in, say, Iraq or the Ukraine, you'd draw the obvious conclusion that foul play had swung an election against the true will of the people and an electoral coup had taken place. You know you would. In fact, it actually happened in the Ukraine in 2004 -- with the extra-moonbat-esque use of disfiguring poisons.

We don't poison candidates. Yet.

I was so discouraged when I found out that even here on DU people clamor to say "there is no proof the election was stolen". The media blacks out the kennedy story, and we have an election tomorrow (california). We couldn't get 16 citizen poll watchers to work with judy alter checking the vote count. (We do have 14 though.)

Voter registration groups say new rules confusing

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Groups that pay people to register voters complained Monday to the Ohio secretary of state's office that new rules governing their activities are confusing and have put a chilling effect on their efforts to sign up new voters.

Representatives of the Ohio Democratic Party, the League of Women and other groups active in registering voters said the rules developed by Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell's office go beyond the law they were intended to implement.

The Legislature, controlled by Republicans, passed the bill Jan. 1 and the rules covering paid circulators went into effect on May 2, the day of Ohio's primary in which Blackwell defeated fellow Republican Jim Petro for the GOP nomination for governor. The rules to not apply to volunteers who register voters.

Groups such as MoveOn.org and America Coming Together were active in 2004 registering voters in the groups' attempt to defeat President Bush. Don McTigue, a lawyer representing a similar group, Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN, said the rules are causing such groups to look for new voters outside Ohio...

To be included among that illustrious list is a great honour.

US... election time is coming fast... first summer, an abundance of hurricanes and a president playing with his cactuses… and then come September/October it will hit us all in the face like the train wreck that we all know it will surely be.

And then before we have time to collect our thoughts, it will have happened again. Election Theft 2006.

At present the conventional wisdom among Democrats who think they lost fairly in 2004 (plus a bunch of those who thought 2006 was crooked too) is that the good guys cannot possibly lose in November 2006 with a President so unpopular, events in the real world playing so badly for the administration (The War and the Climate) and a GOP so out of tune with reality.

This is a mistake....

The combination of skillful media management (Karl Rove's true genius) combined with wide scale election theft is an unbeatable combination unless it is actively opposed at both a grass roots and central party committee level.

Meanwhile most of the grass roots and all but a tiny minority of party leadership are still on a planet where election integrity remains fully intact.

Lets for a moment suspend discussion of whether JFK Junior is right and 2004 was stolen. Rather lets simply assume that it was and then think what that means. Principally:



For those of us who have studied this subject inside and out we knew it was going to happen in 2004. We knew there would be vote theft and vote suppression. We knew it would be widespread and massive.

But we did not know exactly how it would be accomplished and we thought – MISTAKENLY – that if we proved it had happened people would now at last listen to us.

We watched it happen on the very night. Raw Story, DU (special mention TIA = "truthisall") and Scoop reported it. Live.

When we saw the exit polls stats we thought it was a smoking gun (as it was.) But we did not know how it happened. We were BETRAYED BY JOHN KERRY AND HIS SPINELESS ADVISORS.

Senator Barbara Boxer later believed in John Conyers fantastic efforts sufficiently to save Congress from the ultimate humiliation of having the result certified unopposed. But for all the coverage this generated in the media it might as well have been.

Now, thanks to Greg Palast, Fitrakis and Wasserman, Mark Crispin Miller, John Conyers and countless activists we know how the election was stolen. We know where it happened. When and to some extent who was involved. We can pinpoint the counties where it took place if necessary.

Last week RFK Jnr – following in the footsteps of Gore Vidal and several authors at Vanity Fair at least one of whom is more often known as right wing reactionary – reported yet again that it was not our lying eyes that deceived us but the talking heads on the TV.

So let me ask again.

Dobbs is right to be concerned about the ownership of voting machine companies, we all are. But this story stinks. Finally the MSM is concerned about the ownership of voting machine companies… but not by the ownership by GOP stalwarts. But by the possible ownership by South American dictators.

There have always been rumours/stories about South American rigging of US elections circulating in the background since I was introduced to this subject. Now it seems there is proof.

And a bit of Government bungling to boot of supervision of these things it seems. This is all too convenient.

But when read in light of Mark Crispin Miller's extraordinary findings in Fooled Again it is positively disturbing. These stories create a very interesting nexus.



This is Freeper fantasy par excellence. Of course they need to respond by stealing the election again themselves. The future of the republic is at stake.

Which brings me to some political analysis and how I now suspect the ELECTION THEFT 2006 game will be played.

Immigration (i.e. the political playing of the race card) was what was launched at *s big prime time speech last month.

Troops were sent to the border and Halliburton was given huge contracts to build concentration camps.

The immigration policy * adopted is classic "wedge politics". (Ironically this speech took place on the very day we were fixated on the prospect of Karl Rove's imminent indictment.)

In the game of politics – and I am by profession a political journalist here in NZ - immigration & playing the race card is in political terms the equivalent of playing the joker.

The political use of a race card to gain power to implement a fascist agenda is also what Hitler did. It is inherently dangerous... and it is inherently evil politics… but we live in an immoral world and it has been used to spectacular effect all over the world in recent years.

Recent elections in Australia, New Zealand, Holland and Austria all indicate that when done tastefully in a nation with a racist underbelly the race-card is the ultimate vote generator. It works a treat and confounds the punditocracy by the bucketful.

It has been played thrice in the last decade with spectacular effect in NZ politics including the most recent two elections in NZ where the card was played by a parachuted in neo-liberal economist who is presently the leader of the NZ equivalent of the Grand Old Party (if only it still was!!!).

This most recent NZ election – September last year - also saw:
- widespread allegations of US GOP political consultant involvement;
- the bizarre involvement of a Christian Right sect (the Exclusive Brethren who also recently backed Mel Martinez in Florirda) in an underground dirty tricks campaign;
- the involvement of Australian consultants who worked recently with the Tories in London when they too played a mild version of the race card (it failed).

In NZ our race-relations policy dominated election was marked by:

1. Huge volatility in political polling numbers (a spread of 15% in the week before the election)... sufficiently large much so that any result could have been demonstrably possible at the ballot box.

2. Huge gains for the National Party over their past performance...

3. An ambitious last minute run at the prize from the right... including a bid for an absolute majority (which under our proportional representation system – MMP – Mixed Member Proportional - was fortunately assured to fail. Historical Note: NZ's electoral system is the same as Germany's which was specifically designed to counter the achievement of absolute majority by a fascist minority.)

So lets apply this political meme to the current situation in the US.

Whether the playing race-card actually changes public opinion sufficiently or not is not the issue for the 2006 US elections.

When you have the ability to modify the count with some degree of subtlety what is important is creation of the political cover to justify your victory in the face of evidence to the contrary. In other words you need to confound the punditocracy and keep them confused.

The race card in NZ was effective but it did not actually result in victory for the National Party – but it did come close…. similarly an anti-immigration card failed in the most recent UK elections though again there was significant conservative traction from it. It did however work well for John Howard in the last Australian federal elections. (One downside of playing the race card is that it also mobilizes the opposition because they recognize fascism when they see it – not that it is particularly hard in the US these days.)

So while the race-card may not be able to deliver the GOP the house in 2006-2008 what it is indisputably capable of is creating a great deal of confusion over the issue of who is leading in the build up to the election.

I do not think Lou Dobbs is deliberately acting as a tool of right wing propaganda. This is far more subtle than that. And the fact that a mainstream commentator - generally thought of as somewhat kindly and a bit liberal - is potentially being co-opted in this fashion gives a very strong steer on the caliber of the opposition media strategising.

The management of public opinion has become an art and the interests that back the Bush Administration have control of both the message and the media.

Combined the memes in these two stories

Have the potential to provide:

1. a) Justification for a sudden shift in apparent voting intentions between now and autumn (which you call fall).

and

b) Credible cover for the creation of huge poll volatility.

(i.e. this be the effect.... confirmed in the exit polls this time - but which will be kept under wraps this time most probably but I would think sophisticatedly manipulated to justify the result – they will not make that mistake again ...this in turn will justify even greater numbers of GOP votes being found nationwide in 2006 - and further undermining of the "conventional wisdom" of the usefulness of polling as a check method against election results.)

2. a message to the base of the GOP - the 1000s of activists who actually ran the dirty tricks campaigns and stuffed the ballot boxes in 2000 and 2004 who will be called upon to do it again in 2006 and 2008.

The beauty of this strategy is not only in that it can be used to blindside the media and the public. It will also blindside the Democratic Party.

It will do this precisely because this sort of fascist politics really does stand a chance of working.

When in September and October 2006 the published polls (and remember back to 2004, and who precisely is conducting many of these polls, and how easy they are to screw with these as soon as you start sampling different ratios of registered republicans and democrats) start going haywire the DNC and DLC will doubtless conclude that they have over-estimated the moral fibre of the electorate. They will conclude that the race card is working.

(ALSO NOTE WELL: The starting point for the pollsters in deciding on the sample sizes for the the 2006 polls will be the ballot stuffed numbers for the 2004 election which are still "officially" the best basis for making this assessment. i.e. This means that the polls will already be inherently biased towards overstating the GOP vote in all areas where votes were stolen in 2004.)

Then fearing they have again be out maneuvered Democratic Party leadership and candidates will respond by going all spineless as is their want - and just as Karl Rove is planning and expecting.

All the while behind the scenes the silent army of election stealers - who believe that a liberal corrupt society has handed over the keys of the electoral system to a South American dictator - will be preparing to steal the election from under their noses again.

Moreover, we have been through this with Manjoo and many of the people that he cites before. He and they either do not understand the relevant statistics and mathematics of rigorous exit poll analysis and should not be reporting or prognosticating on this topic, or they simply refuse to accept their errors of interpretation and understanding.


As I have been fighting them as best I can, it is nice to see that I am not the only one who thinks this way. It is encouraging, to say the least. Thanks, Ron.
