I've sent Jonathan Simon's "this is it" letter to all MoveOn PAC staff
Individually.

Here's my intro to it:

Dear Ben, Matt, Adam Green, Marika, Justin, Jennifer, Carrie, Rosalyn, Eli, Adam, Tom, Noah, Wes, Joan, Tanya, Natalie, Roy and Nita ("the whole MoveOn.org Political Action Team":

This is one of those times when a relatively small action can have great impact, and failure to act will be devastating.

First, I applaud you for hearing your members' cry that restoring democracy is of the utmost importance right now. As I write this, democracy is slipping through our fingers. MoveOn can have a huge effect right now.

We the People must challenge the announcement that Bilbray won the race for the Congressional seat formerly occupied by Cunningham. The results of that election are inconclusive.

If we stand by and accept inconclusive election results, we will be guaranteed more of the same.

Francine Busby prematurely conceded this race, before all votes were counted. She does not have the standing to concede our democracy. We the People do not and must not concede.

Here is an excellent letter by Jonathan Simon outlining the situation and what people can do about it. This letter is circulating rapidly via the internet. I have no way of knowing how many calls and emails have resulted from it yet. Of course, MoveOn can increase the publicity and the pressure thousandfold. There is no

More information on the Busby/Bilbray race is available at bradblog.com.

Thank you for your consideration. Remember, your members want you to take on issues of restoring democracy in powerful ways right now.

Sincerely,

Emily Levy

1. What do you think the chances they will get involved?

2. Perhaps somewhat better than usual in that they just
did a whole big survey of their members and restoring democracy is now one of their main stated goals. Here's how they put it in the email announcing the survey results:

...When the polls closed last night at 11:59, "Health care for all" and "Energy Independence: clean, renewable sources" were the clear winners for the first and second plank, with 82.8% of voters choosing one or both. We're proud to put these bold, inspiring goals front and center in our work to come.

But for the final plank, things got a little interesting. "Restored constitutional rights" and "verifiable, accurate elections" ended up in a virtual tie for the third slot (0.7% apart) but clearly ahead of the rest of the field.

We took a hard look at what folks were saying about both issues, and realized that they shared a very similar purpose: guarding against anti-democratic abuses of power. When the President puts himself above the law to invade our private lives, democracy is threatened. When thousands of votes are lost or deleted and there's no way to check the results, democracy is threatened. We believe in a country where our rights are safe, and our votes always count— that's democracy restored.

It's exciting to know how united we are—a full 96.8% of voters chose at least one of these top issues.

-------

It's hard to "keep hope alive" when it comes to MoveOn, but every once in awhile I believe in reincarnation!
