WaPo: A Single Person Could Swing an Election
I'll bet someone who's married could swing an election, too, but :wow: what a headline!

A Single Person Could Swing an Election

Electronic Systems' Weaknesses May Be Countered With Audits, Report Suggests

By Zachary A. Goldfarb
Special to The Washington Post
Wednesday, June 28, 2006; Page A07

snip

The report, which was unveiled at a Capitol Hill news conference by New York University's Brennan Center for Justice and billed as the most authoritative to date, tackles some of the most contentious questions about the security of electronic voting.

The report concluded that the three major electronic voting systems in use have significant security and reliability vulnerabilities. But it added that most of these vulnerabilities can be overcome by auditing printed voting records to spot irregularities. And while 26 states require paper records of votes, fewer than half of those require regular audits.

"With electronic voting systems, there are certain attacks that can reach enough voting machines . . . that you could affect the outcome of the statewide election," said Lawrence D. Norden, associate counsel of the Brennan Center.

snip

Republican Reps. Tom Cole (Okla.) and Thomas M. Davis III (Va.), chairman of the House Government Reform Committee, joined Rep. Rush D. Holt (D-N.J.) in calling for a law that would set strict requirements for electronic voting machines. Howard Schmidt, former chief of security at Microsoft and President Bush's former cybersecurity adviser, also endorsed the Brennan report.

5. Actually it was 8:36 PM and it was Rove & Bush and it was the Oval Office
"Election War Room" consisting of 6 folding tables with 2 PCs and communications equipment each, and staffed by RNC employees, not White House employees (photos and facts were supplied courtesy of the White House). This, as reported by Wolf Blitzer on CNN and Keith Olbermann on MSNBC on the evening of November 3rd.

8. They already know. If I knew the WaHo knows. Now, the
question could be, why did they release this story now? Yes, the report came out now but they've had multiple opportunities.

The timing might be important.

This snip is hilarious, though: "Voting machine vendors have dismissed many of the concerns, saying they are theoretical and do not reflect the real-life experience of running elections, such as how machines are kept in a secure environment."

Not only are these concerns theoretical but so is my vote on these machines. That's not a vote, it's a wish.

11. They must have heard that Rolling Stone got more feedback on their article
than any other story in their history.

I also think they KNOW itt may blow up bigger and are playing CYA on it with a limited number of stories while still not allowing any dedicated focus.

7. Farmbo, I apologize. Sincerely.
I believe you are owed an apology.

You are not going to get it from DC or the corporate media.

So I thought I would step up to the plate.

Farmbo, I apologize. Sincerely.

9. Why not just revert to hand counted paper ballots if the report sez
"The report concluded that the three major electronic voting systems in use have significant security and reliability vulnerabilities. But it added that most of these vulnerabilities can be overcome by auditing printed voting records to spot irregularities. "

why bother spending the billions for junk that only has a 5 yr shelf life and isn't dependable anyway and depends on having the paper trail hand counted to determine whether it is working properly

why not just bypass the machinery altogether and handcount. It ain't impossible

10. Furthermore, beware of making election wares depend on the
audit for accurate results if you are pushing for HR550 since HR550 will place this last bastion of protection, THE AUDIT, into private hands and we all know how well the model of privatizing government services works

12. Let's see: Gore was forecasted to win Florida by 300,000 (7%)
So, yeah, the question is "When?" indeed. As if we didn't watch it on teevee.
