maybe stupid question- election judges
i have served as a judge in the last 3 elections. if were any shenanigans happening in my precinct, they are very well hidden. but we know that this is not always the case. there must be precincts where at least one of the judges is appalled, but for one reason or another is not speaking out. maybe fear of losing the job, or their day job, or just loyalty, or simply because they don't know who to tell, or no one asked.
so my question is this- judges of election ought to be a matter of public record. my commission always has my name, address and phone, plus those of the other judges serving. has anyone ever pulled these records out, and talked to these people? i know that a few candidates went to great lengths to try to find out what happened, like clint curtiss surveying voters. but this seems like an avenue that not only could yield answers, but would turn up folks who have already taken an oath. out of 5 judges in every polling place, i would think that at least one actually cares about that oath.
discuss.

1. Or maybe they don't know how to proceed with disclosure
Many precincts through out the US are staffed on election day with Senior Citizens. Many IMO are too old to safe guard our elections.
Love them for their commitment but many are there to get that check from the Election Board and that is it.
It always amazes me how long it takes to find my name in the book each election. If your name starts with S they start looking in the A's and leaf through each page. This is not a one time experience and I am sure others have had similar experiences.
I have lived and voted in 3 states and that part has not changed.

If '04 I did Voter Protection in a precinct and the judge was a republicon and I had to fight for my right to stay and observe. There were a couple of instances where she was going to deny someone the opportunity to vote until I stood up and approached the table and offered assistance to the voter. Then and only then would she give the people a ballot or a provisional ballot.
Those little things can go undetected if the judge has been doing it all along and the others on at the table are the same people that have been there election after election.

2. no, you don't tend to get the best and the brightest.
and as you say, lots of seniors have been doing it of decades. i had a judge with me at the last election that was so mentally challenged it was a trial just to keep her from screwing things up. we gave her the job of telling people how to put their ballot in the box. and she screwed that up! there are a lot of assisted living and social service type agencies in my ward, and we do get a lot of our judges there.

one of the most infuriating things about the machines is the amount of time in training that is devoted to that, leaving almost none for actual election law and procedure. i was just infuriated at my training. if i hadn't already known the law, and a little procedure, and known about voter suppression techniques that are used, several votes would have been lost in my precinct. i worked with an actual republican, which you don't see a lot in chicago, and he wanted to make everyone cough up a photo id! he was a decent guy, tho, and once i explained it to him, he started almost yelling at people if they started to pull the licenses out.

3. Thank you for your time energy and patience (should I say it?)
The fact that we don't have paid staff at the actual polls is frighteneing.

And like you say, so much of the training goes into things other than the law.

Is it an oversight that it is like that? Or deliberate.

Out in Marin COunty CA when ever I tried to tell the Registratr of Voters how inadequate things were, he would always say that the budget jsut doesn't allow for changes, taht it is difficult to ge the people that are needed to supervise the elections at the precinct level etc.

But I always feel, if there is a will, there is a way. (BTW, there is money in MArin County to keep on the payroll a woman who goes around attempting to get young activist voting groups from handing out pamplets. So I think it is about distribution of the money rather than there not being money.)
