How conservatives are like god
I may get totally flamed for this but the idea has stuck in my head and will not go away.

How conservatives are like god.

Both see terrible things happen and do nothing.

You can talk to either and never be entirely sure they have heard a word you said.

Both let evil men control the world.

Both punish those who don't agree with them.

Both do terrible things and call it good.

Both love power.

Both will lock you up and throw away the key.

They both want your money.

They both require sacrifice.

When the shit hits the fan all you see is the people who work for them.

1. Both
reject a rational based world.

Both think the most important thing is your belief and allegiance to them.

2. Which god(s) are you talking about?
All of them?

Your post seems to assume that this god actually exists and his/her existence is characterized by certain attributes. Why do you believe this?

8. As far as I can tell, the foo shits on all of them
the millions of dead and forgotten gods who made men tremble in the past and the various gods who inspire outpourings of flattery and money in churches, mosques and temples today.

They're all alike, whether or not they exist outside the minds of the believers.

9. I just find it curious
And perhaps I am guilty of this as well, but I don't understand.

Why do people who don't believe in god assign characteristics to that mythical being? Why do they accept the characteristics assigned by other people?

If god does not exist, then god is not evil, god is not love, god does not exist.

The OP compares god to conservatives, but the comparison is blatantly false because conservatives exist and god doesn't.

11. Oh, but gods do exist
in all their various forms but within the minds of the people who dream them up. To those people, gods are very real and there's nothing we can do to convince them otherwise, so the OP holds up.

One thing I learned in working with psychotics scooped up off the street was never to tell them the voices and apparitions weren't real. I just told them that I couldn't see or hear them. Telling them the truth built a hell of a lot more trust than denying their reality did and saved me from being the recipient of the contents of a thrown bedpan more than once.

It's the same with the god squad. I am honest enough, when pressed, to tell them that I just never had anyone at the other end of the prayer line, and that's that. If they do, then have a ball with him/her/it/them.

12. Because it's fun.
I call it "arguing at their level". You can always fall back on "god doesn't exist" when your tired of it.

6. An Interesting Corollary
In Western cultures the religions with a strong hierarchy (Roman Catholic and LDS) tend to produce politically conservative adherents. It's a matter of unthinking obedience to powerful individuals.

Religions with little or no hierarchy (Jewish and Unitarian) allow for more individual choices.

FWIW

10. Your Point is Well Taken, but ...
IMHO, the rank and file evangelicals did not gravitate toward the republican party so much as the republican party re-invented itself to cater to the leadership of the evangelical movement (Robertson, Falwell, et al). In the early part of the 20th century, MANY non-calvanist protestant denominations were populist in political philosophy. We are seeing to a return to populism in SOME positions of evangelical republicans like, Mike Huckabee.
