1. "Unitarians, said Lohre, are defined by their tolerance."
"We did not require the person to be a Unitarian Universalist," said Brown. "But the person needed to share the values of openness and curiosity, of a real welcome of diversity that we see as hallmarks of the congregation."

That's why I always enjoy visiting UU churches, and have even joined a couple over the years.

Nice post - k&r

2. Interesting concept. I'm not sure I'd like that, but that's just me. The treatment of women and all.
Along the line of the title of the article is my favorite movie interchange about church. It's from the movie Sounder. All characters are African-American. The role of Ike is played by Taj Mahal:

DAVID LEE What do they do in the white churches, Mama?

REBECCA Same as we -- they pray.

IKE You know, one time by mistake I went into a white church down in Row County and to this day I don't know how'n the devil I got outta that church alive.

NATHAN LEE They probly thought you was crazy.

IKE I guess so -- but I went home and did me some praying to the Lord. I said, Lord, I went into this white church down in Row and all I want you to tell me is how I ever got outta there in one piece.

NATHAN LEE What did the Lord tell you, Ike?

IKE He said, I don't know, Ike -- you doin' better'n me, I been tryin' to git in there for 200 years and ain't make it yet!

5. Many Muslims would tell you that the denigration and
subjugation of women often noted about Islam is a perversion of the Koran. I do believe it's far more cultural than strictly religious.

I think she sounds pretty cool, and I wouldn't hesitate a second to happily have her teach my child at church school! (And he's learned things there that I don't agree with - and it only means an opportunity to discuss what it is I believe, and give him pause to be thoughtful about what he's learning.)

3. The Church of England Blackburn Cathedral appointed a Muslim dialogue development officer in 2007

Reading through the comments to the news article, you see some of the attitudes they're up against. You'd think they'd torn down the bell tower and replaced it with a minaret. This is an especial problem with an established church, of course - some people who may never set foot in it nevertheless expect it to be nationalistic, and to reject any dialogue with any other religion.

6. That's cool. I'm a UU.
Don't have a church anywhere nearby here in Protestant Redneckistan.

9. Three cheers for the Unitarian Universalists
In my view, they will be the biggest churches of the future, after the coming reformation.
