Pope urges respect for women during Mass in Jordan

AMMAN, Jordan (CNN) -- Pope Benedict XVI urged greater respect for women Sunday at a historic Mass in the Middle East.

"Sadly, this God-given role of the dignity of women has not always been understood and esteemed," the pontiff said on his first visit to Jordan as pope.

"By its public witness of respect for women ... the Church in the Holy Land can make an important contribution to the advancement of a culture of true humanity and the building of the civilization of love," the pontiff said.

Of course, the "God-given role of the dignity of women" may not include floggins and wearing of the burqa, but does include being a baby factory and being barred from priesthood.

4. If there were respect for women during the Mass, women would be able to celebrate the Mass. They

aren't.

I wonder if the Pope will say that torturing and stoning gays to death is wrong? Or do we have respect only for some lives?

18. Not even then.
Seen many R. Catholic women celebrating the mass lately? Yeah, me either. That's why I'm now an Episcopalian!

6. DO WHAT!!!!!????
The Bronze Age Master in a clown suit is calling for respect for women? This no different than claiming he is pro-life yet tells people in Africa condoms are evil and not to use them!

I swear this Bronze Age crap is insane...Anyone who follows the Bible has serious issues they need to deal with, ANYONE!

11. Papal Robo-Defenders will show up in 5...4...3...2...
Wherein we will all learn, via cut-n-paste Wiki links, that the Catholic Church has ALWAYS respected women's rights.

Hell, we'll probably get a lecture...I mean, sermon...on how the Church INVENTED women's rights, and the current Pope is advancing said rights.

Usual Irrelevant Personal Trivia: last year I got the chance to go to Rome, fulfilling a lifelong wish. I was working in Alexandria, Egypt, so it was a fairly short flight.

Of course I took a tour of the Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel, etc. Our tour finished in St. Peter's Square.

Our tour guide pointed out the Egyptian obelisk in the Square, and went on to tell us that Xians were martyred there by the Romans.

And that was the end of the history lesson.

I endeared myself to everyone--insert SARCASM smiley--by pointing out what happened at the Square in 1943. After some leisurely sight-seeing, the SS rounded up 1900 Italian Jews and shipped them to Auschwitz. Right under the Pope's nose (or his windows, at least.)

Well, it was the end of the tour anyway, so they couldn't kick me off it...

15. what does matter what this pope or any pope has say
is this day and age. look, there are some individual catholics i respect, dorthy day, founder of the catholic worker movement, archbishop romero, and other activist catholics, but beyond that what does it matter what the catholic church says. the institution has been a scourge on humanity almost since its founding.

17. He sounds like he's echoing his predecessor - although
with less poetry.

It's always wrapped in hearts and flowers about the importance of women. What's underneath though is "so long as they stay in their place, don't make a fuss, and leave all the important decisions and work to us men."

in stead of just "greater respect."

But that's just not going to happen.

21. It's tough to claim moral or ethical superiority
when you support the inferior status of 51% of the people.

I wonder if these are the same people who say that atheists don't have a solid moral or ethical foundation?

Hmmm?
