What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding?
Q. When did it become cool, hip and trendy for liberals, progressives and Democrats to be intolerant and judgmental of each other?
A. It didn't

What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding?

written by Nick Lowe

As I walk through
This wicked world
Searchin' for light in the darkness of insanity.

I ask myself
Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?

And each time I feel like this inside,
There's one thing I wanna know:
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

And as I walked on
Through troubled times
My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes
So where are the strong
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

'Cause each time I feel it slippin' away, just makes me wanna cry.
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

So where are the strong?
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

'Cause each time I feel it slippin' away, just makes me wanna cry.
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

18. Poses an interesting question, "What is a man?"
I don't know the type of postmortem care he received, but he probably no longer resembles what many would refer to as a "man."

Are dead people still people, are cremated remains still people?

Probably no right answer to these questions.

And neither one of our personal/individual upbringing claims counts for anything.

The only thing that matters is the science of humanity, the proof in the pudding-

Can you show me a purpose built atheist commune? A place in which atheists (Socialist atheists/Eco atheists/Gay atheists) have managed to come together from diverse cultural and language backgrounds and showcase the hard work of how to live together?

Since the French revolution hundreds of attempts have been made…surely you can find >one< successful atheist commune?

I do so look forward to your response…because every other atheist has cut, forged, falsified and run from the pertinent question.

Exactly “how much effort is required” in the most basic social experiment of getting people of the same philosophy/ideology to live and work together and how come atheists can’t produce an example?

I do so wish that atheists didn't believe that you weren't equal to others. Maybe if they could get past this irrational hatred of people who were different, they could build the kind of successful community that you're talking about, where no one is discriminated against on the basis of race or gender or sexual orientation. The kind of community that the christians have maintained for years and years.

And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

I hope someday you'll join us

then obviously some form of belief is better.

It never dawns on the people who trot out this little demand that no one builds a community around something they DON'T believe in.

The opposite of the I Believe in Fairies club is no the I DON"T Believe in Fairies club, but rather simply not joining the club in the first place.

67. Oh no…we had a very in depth chat on communes…
In which I was informed highland gorillas would constitute an atheistic commune…
And North American indigenous culture (which isn’t anywhere near as spiritual/religious as some would like to pretend ;-)…that would, apparently, be an atheistic commune as well.

It was a very informative conversation…but don’t ever raise or mention Jane Goodall and the worshipful chimpanzee… ok.

66. Bollocks. Do some research on the history of atheistic communes
the very point and purpose of which was to show the world how people could and should live without religion getting in the way.

Philosophical atheist communes, ecological atheist communes, socialist atheist communes, lifestyle/ sexuality atheist communes…hundreds have been attempted with the express purpose of showcasing to the world just how wonderful things can be without stupid old religion.

“It never dawns on the people who trot out this little demand that no one builds a community around something they DON'T believe in. “

Tell it to the French atheists following the revolution, tell it to the eco atheists of the 60’s, tell it to the socialist atheists….oh….no….can’t be done….

Because after I was obliged to point out to you last time that an entire culture/society does not qualify as a commune you did a dummy spit and put me on ‘ignore’.

That’s atheist tolerance for ya….can’t live together and can’t stand being shown up as wrong...can't stand hearing any voice other than their own.

65. It’s a basic social science experiment, pertinent because
the experiment has been conducted on numerous occasions by theists and non.

“Why is setting up a commune with only people similar to yourself…”

Because frequently the whole point and purpose of setting up a commune was to model and demonstrate how different/disparate/diverse people could gather to work and live united by a shared ideology/philosophy/belief. Since the French revolution such showcase communities have been established across the globe in the name of atheistic socialism, eco atheism, gay and lesbian atheism…the list goes on.

“…relevant to a thread about tolerance…”

Um…because…if you can’t ‘tolerate’ other people you have real trouble living with them and your model showcase commune falls apart…….just as every secular/atheistic commune has ;-)

“I'd say living in a wider, more diverse society is far more relevant to tolerance.”

Your clearly working on an assumption of reduced or minimal diversity within communes…this is not the case. Communes are environments that more often throw together people from diverse cultures, languages, educational and socio economic backgrounds who would often not meet and interact in broader society.
Within a broader/non specific community people cluster in commonality- socio economic, language, profession etc…and while tolerance is often called for it is nowhere near the kinds of tolerance required in the crucible of working and living together.

Atheists are often heard extolling the virtues of evidence based repeatable experiment science …well…the purpose built commune provides such an experiment in the most important science of all-
that of living together.

Thus far religionists have been able to repeat the experiment over and over again over thousands of years with long term success.

Thus far, despite innumerable attempts, communes founded on the most well thought out and well funded atheistic principles have invariably failed.

It aint rocket science…it’s the human science of tolerance and transcendence of difference.

69. Now, now...
...you're just "projecting"! Everything bad you do is your fault, all of the bad you think you see other people do, at least certain special people, is just your own badness reflecting back.

Surely you'll buy that, if not from me, then from unimpeachable sources of Deep Spiritual Wisdom far more Enlightened than either of us? Just open your heart and see how bad you are! ;)

I'll exercise my freedom of speech to question what I want to question, ask people to better explain themselves when I don't think they're explaining themselves very well, say that I think things are incorrect when I think they're incorrect, and even to visibly and noticeably laugh when something is so over-the-top absurd that I think it warrants it.

I'll be able to do all of that and still overall be far more civil, and much, much less hypocritical, than some people around here who laughably pose as paragons of tolerance.

Too bad, it's classic. Very well worded.

"I'll exercise my freedom of speech to question what I want to question, ask people to better explain themselves when I don't think they're explaining themselves very well, say that I think things are incorrect when I think they're incorrect, and even to visibly and noticeably laugh when something is so over-the-top absurd that I think it warrants it.

You'll be able to but unwilling, is that it?

So being "able" is what's important not actually doing it ... aka HYPOCRITICAL!! :hi:

...I'm doing all I said right now, ready, willing, and able. You'll just never recognize it as such, over which I will not lose any sleep.

You could have even figured out that that's what I meant, even if you don't agree, but it's a perfect example of how you aren't the paragon of tolerance that you think you are in that you'll play up any little distortion you can deliberately make in order to be able to screech out aspersions like "HYPOCRITICAL!" (along with the trademark passive-agressive :hi: of course). Very Rovian of you, in fact.

You also fail to realize, or prefer to pretend to act as if you don't realize, that I don't consider being more civil than yourself a very tough standard to meet.

Like I said, I have no interest in proving anything to you, since you're an impossible case. You're hypersensitive to other people's talk, and blind to your own venom. (Yes, yes... that's just me "projecting", we've heard that excuse before.)

That you can't even honestly criticize, but have to throw in the :hi: and the  in order to say, "Ha! You're so ridiculous! Look! See me laughing at you! See!".

And please, spare me yet another predicable claim that that's "projection" too -- you might buy it yourself in your own fantasy of tolerance, but few others would. I'd love to see the explanation of how :hi: and  are part of some form of high-minded legitimate criticism, at least if you don't then fall back to your second line of defense, the "you started it first!" excuse.

However, your comments about the smilies are just mad. Take them at face value -- as corny as it may be --

What I said was "With (friendly recognition) all around and Not (luaghing or ridicule)"

What you got was ""Ha! You're so ridiculous! Look! See me laughing at you! See!"

That's just crazy.

Good luck with your aspirations. (thumbsup)

More passive aggressive BS: Rather than flatly disagreeing with my assertion that I'm already doing the things I described doing, and that I'm already quite civil by the admittedly weak standard of being more civil than yourself, you continue to blithely ignore that and pretend I'm talking about a future plan you're waiting to see, with smart-ass bits like "Good luck with your aspirations."

Why? Will you leave?

Your "dream" DU is a place where no one's opinions or beliefs are ever questioned, let alone challenged. A place that would be so horribly stagnant because no honest debate could ever occur. A place that would become a kooky echo chamber where everyone could say what they want, but no one could really say anything. A place that would quickly shut down due to lack of interest in participating.

Good luck in your quest though to try and purge DU of those who offend you. Maybe you'll succeed one day, and find yourself as the one and only poster left. Then no one will be around to - gasp - question your beliefs and "facts."

Can you do any of it civilly? Good. problem solved. Can you set the excellent standard and tone that Silent 3 invoked and apparently thinks he already exemplifies :spray: ?? Good. Problem solved.

Your post is a perfect example of the falsity of claims of behaviors that ARE violations of those guidelines and you KNOW it. It's fascinating how the same folks that come down so hard, use such innocuous language for what they pretend to be doing.

"Honest debate," "questioned," even "challenged..." are you capable of doing this "civilly'?

Good. Problem solved.

It's problematic tho, when individuals go back to a hidey hole and use the talents and energies to ridicule, harass, scheme and dehumanize fellow DUers.

95. And there's the problem.
For you, only someone who refrains from disagreeing with you is behaving "civilly." This is patently obvious every time you get in a snit on a thread. You don't like honest debate. You don't like being questioned. And you absolutely despise being challenged. Whenever any of these things happen, YOU are the one who immediately launches into an attack on the person who is questioning you. It's akin to Reagan's old "There you go again" gambit.

You do have a point about the ASAH hidey hole though, and the tendency of its denizens to proclaim their superiority to other DUers.

are false statements.

Worst one first. Total lie about ASAH who do not even bother with what others do, do not "proclaim their superiority to other DUers" and do not use their group to focus on others the way they are monitored and harassed by others.

"You don't like honest debate. You don't like being questioned. And you absolutely despise being challenged."

The first bit is a load of crap. I object to belligerence. More disingenuousness about how people are treated: "honest debate," "questioned,' "challenged," GMAFB is THAT what you call it? If you can do ANY of those things civilly, feel free. If you want to attack and act asslike, that's not civility, is it?

We've heard plenty of times and most recently today -- and the forums and groups rallying the troops are used to reinforce the notion -- that some topics and ideas DESERVE to be discredited, dismissed and discussion destroyed, according to self styled poobahs with no right to do so.
