What critical editions of Old or New Testament texts are available?
I mean, where can one find carefully edited volumes incorporating modern scholarly thought about the original layers of text and later interpolations?

1. My NIV is one source.
It's by no means the only source. The footnotes sometimes occupy more space than the actual text on page.

There's no one good source. You have to be willing to work and work really hard to get through the layers.

2. I would think that ALL editions have been "carefully edited".
The NIV, that is used by nearly all of the born-agains I know, seems to be rewritten in a modern vernacular. Many passages have subtle yet significant differences from older (KJV) versions that make it "easier" to read and "understand", IOW, to understand the view of Evangelicals. I have had discussion where we are looking at contradictions between passages and when I use a quote from the KJV to illustrate my point, they often come back with "well in MY version it doesn't say that..."

Thats my take on it, YMMV.

8. I suppose I am looking, not for easy reading, but rather for a defensible modern scholarly
examination of text

Bart Ehrman, for example, in discussing the "Acts of Thecla" in his Lost Christianties, briefly summarizes a coherent argument, suggesting that 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 is an interpolation into the Pauline text. I have a Bible in which 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 is noted to conflict with 1 Corinthians 11:5, but naturally the marginal note does not go so far as the argument Ehrman summarizes

Many Bibles, of course, note that Mark 16:9ff appears to be a later addition

3. Online source
If you just want to look up specific verses or search on specific words, there are several translations available on this web page:

4. For a 'critical edition' of the NT...
...in the strict sense, i.e. a modern edition of the Greek together with variant readings, Nestle-Aland is online.

5. Agreed. Another correct answer might be "only in the scholarly journals."
Unfortunately they are only available at a rather stiff expense, or in university libraries.

Irritating the price you have to pay for what was originally as free as air. :)

Doubtless SFP already follows Crosstalk: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/crosstalk2/

They've gone into hibernation of sorts, tho............

10. OK. "Critical edition" is a term of art....
...and can mean -- in certain circles, only means -- something like Nestle-Aland.

But then a lawyer and I mean different things by 'briefs'.....

At least regarding the first five books in the Hebrew Bible:

7. Thanks. That looks interesting. I often find such Jewish commentaries quite informative,
which, of course, ought not surprise me
