Joe Paterno sees Big Ten expansion to the east.
JoePa sees expansion of the Big Ten, and he wouldn't mind it coming from his own side of the map. "I think expansion is coming," Paterno said today on a Big Ten coaches' teleconference. ... Paterno, 83, said he would like to see a team from the East be part of the Big Ten's expansion plans, although he didn't mention the names of any schools. "When all this happens, I'll probably be out of this thing," he said. "I'd like to see our particular conference move East a little bit. It would give us a little broader television market and a little more exposure and if we had 12 teams we'd have a chance to get into some kind of championship . Whether that means you go 12 or you go 14. I don't know. I don't know all the consequences."

That to me, means either Pitt or West Virginia

1. It means you don't know shit, mad.
Notice he mentioned possibly sixteen teams? TV revenue. And those hillrats from WV bring NOTHING to the table. Pitt, maybe. Rutgers: NYC and NJ.
Notre Dame: Everything. Mizzou: StL and KC. Less than 60 days to The Cup.

2. Jesus, what's the fucking point?
Fuck TV revenue - what the hell does Rutgers (or Syracuse, or West Virginia) bring to the Big 10 competitively? Who in the hell is excited for an Illinois-West Virginia game? Or Minnesota-Syracuse?

4. Here's the fucking point, jake.
Let's say the Big Ten takes 3 teams. Notre Dame, Rutgers and Mizzou. All bases are covered. You get the Irish. Nothing to be said here. Rutgers:
an up and coming team from the east coast with a developing fan base under a very good coach. And Missouri. Who would fucking jump at the chance to join the Big Ten. Fuck TV revenue? Do you seriously think this is about match-ups?

26. Your thinking is why college sports have gone utterly haywire.
Anybody who thinks conference expansion solely for the sake of adding a TV market, or setting up a conference championship in football, is a good idea has totally lost the plot of what college sports are about.

Nothing about the Big Ten is better with Penn State in the mix.

PSU has been a great addition. The whole central PA thinking is very mid-western. If you add one. Please make it ND.

6. I don't want to add one! I liked it how it was.
I emphatically do not want a super conference - I don't like the rivalries being split up. Plus, as everyone here knows, I like tradition.

If they added a team (God forbid) they'd split it up into two divisions, which would be the death of the Big Ten as we know it - which is how I like it. Sadly, the money grubbers at the top don't see it my way. Have you seen the uglification of Michigan Stadium? Sad moment.

Disagree, again. The traditionalists are not going to win this fight. I'm all for expansion. Keep our rightful place as THE best conference in America. Over the heinous SEC. I'm all for traveling to new and exciting hotspots!!

Id much rather have my Redskins be a middle of the pack team when it comes to money making instead of 1 or 2, if it meant wed win some super bowls.

They added luxury boxes and it's just not the place it used to be. It's sold out.

Nothing is as bad as Qwest Field. There's so much electronic crapola going on there, the game is practically secondary.

If we are going to contract, then get rid of Michigan or Michigan State.

and not paying these guys a fair wage and not providing them with the security they need.

All so that we can have "cheaper" energy and the owners of the mines can have larger yachts.

Edited on Wed Apr-14-10 09:46 PM by madinmaryland
Based on the US Labor Departments latest statistics, the average rate for mine workers is about $23/hr, which I if you calculate into a yearly salary, is just over half of your assertion from the NY Times. The NY Times is taking their information based on miners working overtime.

Now if you consider $46K/yr (assuming no overtime) to be overpaid for a job that is one of the most dangerous jobs, then so be it.

31. Save it, tough guy. Not impressed.
Have the guts to make this argument up in GD? Go start a thread about how miners are overpaid. You obviously feel strongly enough about thios that one would hope you'd show the courage to stand up for this belief. So do you? Bet you don't.

I just got home from my job where I'm not guaranteed any salary or hourly wage.

So this is really about bitterness that others are getting better pay than you, and they get attention for their cause while you plug away in anonymity? Sounds like it.

I have to actually show up and earn a living.

What do you think the miners are doing to earn their pay, sitting at home playing Uno with the kids?

Your jealousy is unbecoming, your talking points right out of the Republican playbook, and your tough guy rhetoric is just making me laugh. Like I said, show some guts and go up to GD and make your argument there. I look forward to seeing you start that thread. Might even make me think you aren't just being a poser down here over this. So go speak up for yourself.

Yes, they are. I don't live by the playbook, but I recognize the plays in them, and you're using one, whether you realize it or not. You should ask yourself why that is instead of acting like a child to the ones pointing that out.

If true, that says more about you than me lol.

It means enough to get your insults. Too bad it can't get your intelligence.

Used to fight for money outside of bars and clubs. Fought constantly playing hockey (you couldn't even stand on skates, let alone fight on them). Sometimes I got my ass kicked, sometimes not. At least I showed the guts you lack. You're not even under the threat of an ass-kicking and you're still too much of a coward to stand up for your beliefs.

Now, back to the movie.

Try not to fap over Helen Hunt.

58. Nope, never saw combat.
Doesn't change anything thing I've said, nor anything you've said. You have no pity for 29 dead miners who died due to the negligence of the mine operators. You claim you hate Unions that could have helped prevent the conditions that led to those deaths. Soldiers are still currently dying in a war that was also due to negligence (or I should say, outright lies). Both the miners and the soldiers are dead due to the wrong actions of others, but you only have sympathy for one. And all because one group makes what you consider to be too much money. Where did this bitterness come from?

Let me ask, if the soldiers were getting paid $200,000/year, would you then mock their deaths as well? Because the only connection I see in your tangents here is the amount of money one makes over the other, and that seems to be driving a rather irrational hatred and making you say some things that are just really sad to see. I know you don't care what I think about you, but we've gotten along fine here and I had respect for you. After your comment above about 29 job openings, maybe a car accident tomorrow won't be such a loss. After all, your death would just be a job opening for someone in your field. Your own logic, right?

I hope when you sober up tomorrow you reread this thread, and then take a look in the mirror.

64. Again, Fork. Very cold logic. I operate in shades of grey.
No offense. What your opinion of me from what I type doesn't mean shit to me. Used to respect me? Why? Because of my opinions on sports? Sorry, man. I would hope that you would respect me for a bit more than that. I have no interest in making this an open forum on GD. What we did tonight was open a little dialogue that need not be settled by anyone but us. I still have a very good (not great respect) for you. I have my opinions. You have yours. The beauty of a good chat.

69. Your logic in this thread is not grey at all.
"I hate unions". No grey there.

"29 job openings". No grey there, either.

Perhaps you could explain these "shades of grey" to me?

I would hope that you would respect me for a bit more than that.

Maybe if you had the courage to post somewhere besides here and the Lounge I'd have more to go on to respect you for.

I have no interest in making this an open forum on GD.

I don't blame you. First intelligent thing you've done tonight.

I still have a very good (not great respect) for you.

Irrelevant now. Unless you can wake up and see your comments for what they are your respect is unwanted.

I have my opinions. You have yours.

Yes, and yours are deranged. 29 job openings. Remember those words...I plan to.

79. ND seems like the natural fit; midwestern, acedemics, they already play 3 Big Ten teams a year...
...however, something tells me they do not want to join. Mizzou? Blech, they have only been decent for the last 5 years out of 40. Iowa State doesn't bring anything to the table, another Indiana. Pitt? I guess they could bring the old PSU/Pitt rivalry back. WV, yuck. Rutgers? Once again, they have only been relevant for the last 5 years. Texas? Pipe dream. Nebraska? They would not join. Cinci, barf and tOSU would never allow it. I'm not sure who else you could ask and/or want.

Nothing really to gain by bringing in Rutgers. Comcast already has BTN on its digital tier. There is already a deal in place with cable vision as well. And the argument about Rutgers and the NY market is ridiculous. Nobody in NY gives a shit about Jersey, they just dont. And until recently, nobody in Jersey gave a shit about Rutgers.

I don't have a problem with WVa, also. I don't like anything more than 12 teams.

I don't want ND and their attitude in the Big 10. Not a good fit. It they want there is a slot open for them in the MAC.

82. Their attitude would quickly evaporate in the Big Ten, mad.
Remember when Penn State joined in '93? They owned the league the first year but it didn't take long before they fell on hard times. I think ND is looking hard at that. Hence, their reluctance. I see a power play coming. They will be forced by the BCS to join a conference. As Capt. says
it would naturally be the Big Ten.

I worked in lower manhattan for many of those years, and believe me when I say there are serious football fans there. Professional Football fans. Giants or Jets. Nothing else. Rutgers?? Fugghetaboutit! There is no real following of college football in the greater nyc area. Will people in the NY market actually pay for Rutgers and Syracuse playing teams they have no rivalry with on the Big 10 network?

Since you think this is all financial, why doesn't the Big Ten network just start and own the Big East network????

Yes they also follow the US Open, but not like they do their pro teams.

Ohio State comes to town and plays Rutgers in the NEW stadium with Pryor at QB and the place isn't packed??? Sorry, Bocephus. Sell out in monster time.
