Nobody Ever Accused Baseball Players Of Being Smart
Mike Venafro, scratched from yesterday's relief appearance, finally has an explanation for the back discomfort that has hampered his career. The southpaw, whose legs are slightly different in length, has been wearing a one-third-inch pad in the wrong shoe for years - essentially doubling the difference between his leg lengths rather than correcting it. Mets doctors discovered the trouble and are easing him into the proper padding. Venafro was in good spirits yesterday, though he confessed: "I was furious, but what can you do?"
One of the athlete's under my care had about a half a centimeter leg length difference which was causing her to get shin splints. So we had the doctor come in and fit her for orthotics, well we had to make him measure her legs 4 or 5 times because he kept getting a reading that made the shorter leg seem like the longer one. The best part about the whole story is, when the girl was sitting up you could visibly see the leg length difference...so sometimes it's not really the athlete's fault!
