NFL commissioner Tagliabue to retire in July
NEW YORK -- Paul Tagliabue is retiring as NFL commissioner in July after more than 16 years on the job.

The 65-year-old commissioner has led the league since 1989, when he succeeded Pete Rozelle, and had recently signed a two-year contract extension to complete the television and labor deals.

He finally got that done 12 days ago, finishing the most arduous labor negotiations since the league and union agreed on a free agency-salary cap deal in 1992.

"I believe that now is a positive time to make the transition to a new commissioner," Tagliabue said in a statement.

I'm surprised. I liked Tagliabue. He did a great job expanding the league.

2. ESPN said that the State Department made a statement
saying that she has stuff she wants to accomplish over the next two years. Oh brother.

3. when you release a statement saying you don't want a job
that pretty much means you do want it, but are stuck where you are.

4. This may be the only chance she has to get it.
If I were her, I'd go for it. It's a job that she has always wanted, so why not take a shot?

5. I agree.
This job will probably not be available for a while. Rozell had it for 30+ years IIRC. Tags had it for 16 years. It's like the changing of the pope.
