Pitcher Used Human Growth Hormone, Document Says

"The suspicion that baseball players continue to use performance-enhancing substances even with the stricter drug testing in place this season has bubbled over with the disclosure that Jason Grimsley of the Arizona Diamondbacks told federal investigators that he was using human growth hormone.

Grimsley, a former Yankee reliever who is in his first season with the Diamondbacks, told investigators that he used anabolic steroids, amphetamines and human growth hormone, or HGH, for several years, according to documents filed in United States District Court in Arizona.

Federal agents searched Grimsley's home in Scottsdale, Ariz., for six hours on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.

In a two-hour interview with agents at a location away from the home, he admitted to receiving and using performance-enhancing substances, according to the court papers. Grimsley also named other major leaguers who used the substances, but those names were blacked out in the documents. Grimsley described some of them as close friends."

Grimsley asks for and gets release from D-Backs

"The Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday released pitcher Jason Grimsley, one day after his home was searched by federal agents as part of an investigation into steroid use by athletes.

Grimsley's agent told The Associated Press he thought this would mark the end of the 38-year-old reliever's career.

"My guess is Jason's done playing," Joe Bick said in a telephone interview. "I couldn't anticipate that he would play again, but that's his call.

"He didn't want to be a distraction to the team."

General manager Josh Byrnes told a Chase Field news conference that Grimsley had requested his unconditional release in meetings with team officials Tuesday and Wednesday.

"We accepted his request," Brynes said."
