2. don't know, the Iranians play very defensive
in a such a game the attacking team can get very tired and open up to a counter-attack...

The president of Iran decided not to attend. Apparently, he did not wish to be a distraction for his team.

on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2.

It's about time!

PS - Marcelo Balboa really needs to get a haircut. He would look so much better without that hair.

Yea.

And never mind that there are 40,000,000 hispanic, 20,000,000 eastern euro, 15,000,000 UK/Irish decendants in this country, and they ALL love this sport.

It is just US sports writers who don't get it.

11. Tell me about it.
I have worked with MLS since it's inception. I've attended many of their Cup championships and All-Star games. Most of the well-known, national sportswriters are extremely condescending, even while there in a working capacity.

9. PS - I love Alexi Lalas doing commentary for this game in the studio.
I love Lex. He and I got to be good friends in the late 90's. I don't talk to him as much these days, but he is one of the best guys I've ever met in my life. He is genuine to the core and truly a great man.

23. I saw Alexi Lalas play once.
Edited on Sun Jun-11-06 11:40 AM by Cascadian
It was a 1994 at the old Kingdome in a game against Russia. Lalas scored the tie against the Russians and the crowd was on it's feet. Over 40,000 people were there and it reminded me of the days when the Seattle Sounders were in the NASL. Such an electric game!

16. OMG! The announcer talked politics about both teams!
Edited on Sun Jun-11-06 11:33 AM by Cascadian
He just mentioned the fact that Iran's President Mohamedijad was going to attend the game and started talking about Iran's nuclear program. Then later on, he started talking about immigration issues with the Mexicans. It just reminds of when Brian Williams made those statements about Iran during Opening Ceremonies in Turin earlier this year.

Why can't we just have no politics involved in sports? I just want to watch the game, enjoy myself, and not have to think about this stuff for a couple of hours.

27. Some American announcers just don't have the appeal.
Al Michaels ought to just stick to American football. I have to be honest that I actually like the British commentators better when they are doing a game. Just my opinion. They add more experience and it sounds better than the standard garden variety "Yankee soccer" talk!

30. It makes a difference when you grow up playing a sport.
Edited on Sun Jun-11-06 12:07 PM by TahitiNut
Unlike American football, where pituitary anomalies take over, soccer is a sport that's far more 'democratic' (like baseball once was) and working class. British announcers typically played at least as kids. I doubt Al Michaels played any of the sports he announces.

Soccer is a far more 'available' sport for all kids. It requires a minimum of equipment, can be played with various sized teams, and can be played almost anywhere they can find the space to play. Even the poorest kids can play. All it takes is the ability to run and kick. For the kid who can't run fast for very long - there's goalkeeping.

The sports equipment manufacturers don't have all the opportunities to rip off the kids selling gloves, bats, helmets, pads, bases, and other paraphernalia. The game doesn't have time outs - so the advertisers don't get their 20 minutes out of every 60. (If it wasn't for the sidelines billboards, I wonder whether it's be broadcast at all.)

32. Al Michaels is a fool.
I loved the fact that right before half-time he just had to mention the fact that in 1998 when Iran beat the US, their fans were celebrating in the streets of Tehran.

Does this amadan not realize that the World Cup is the biggest show on earth, even the Olympics can't come close to the WC.

Um, Al hate to mention this but football/soccer to the Iranian people is what baseball is to the Americans....

40. It's been the foulest match so far. Forty-six fouls is the highest yet.
I was not impressed. Mexico had 25 fouls called on them - the highest for any team in World Cup 2006 so far. When I compare that to only 19 fouls in the Sweden v. Trinidad match (an excellent match!), I'm a bit disgusted.
